CLASSIFICATION OF MATTER
3
How can you determine whether something is an element or not?
They are all listed on the periodic table. ELEMENT SONG
4
MATTER All matter has volume and mass Amount of space taken up
Amount of matter present
5
Density What weighs more a pound of feathers or a pound of lead?
6
Density Relates the mass of a material in a given volume
Allows easy comparison of different materials Which metal in the chart would weigh the most if we had 1 cm3 blocks of each metal? Which metal would weigh the least?
7
m D v Density What mass would 5.0 cm3 of lead have?
Computed using the formula D=m/v Note the units match the formula! D v What mass would 5.0 cm3 of lead have? What volume or size would g of Al have?
8
Density Related to sinking and floating
Materials that are more dense than the surrounding material will try to sink in it. Materials that are less dense than the surrounding material will try to float on it. The density of water at room temp is about 1g/ml.

Find the density of the object below.
The object was placed on a triple beam balance. 20 An object was dropped into a graduated cylinder that contained 40 mL. Determine the volume of that object. 5.4 Image from
11
Volume = Volume of water & object – volume of water
The solution … Volume = Volume of water & object – volume of water V = 65.0 mL – 40.0 mL V = 25.0 mL M = 25.4 g Density = Mass ÷ Volume D = 25.4 g ÷ 25.0 mL D = 1.02 g/mL ** The object will sink!
12
Find the density of the box below.
Mass 386 g 23.5 cm 6.4 cm 7.8 cm
13
Volume = length x width x height
The solution … Volume = length x width x height V = 23.5 cm x 7.8 cm x 6.4 cm V = cm3 M = 386 g Density = Mass ÷ Volume D = 386 g ÷ cm3 D = 0.33 g/cm3 **The box would float!
