Highlight of Current Activities
Providing leadership in the development & deployment of Internet of Things (IoT)/M2M technologies & open standards Facilitating the development of IoT/M2M market driven standards Our activities support the full life cycle of standards--from concept or incubation to market acceptance & use We are developing a pipeline of standards related activities IoT/M2M technology research & education Market implementation programs Pre-standards activities Accelerated standards activities Post- standards activities
3
Highlight of Current Activities
IEEE IoT workshops Providing attendees with a means to identify collaboration opportunities & standardization gaps related to IoT Helping industry foster continued growth in IoT markets, leverage IEEE's value & platform for IoT industry-wide consensus development & assist with the creation of a vibrant IoT ecosystem IEEE Internet of Things Community Comprised of those involved in research, implementation, application & usage in the internet-enabled vision of our future Help all interested to stay abreast of developments in this multi-disciplinary area
4
Strategic Direction Focus on industry sectors to further define IoT/M2M needs for those sectors, through industry workshops around the world Investigate opportunities for collaboration with existing organizations focused on IoT/M2M Provide a resource for IoT/M2M policy related issues Optimize the unique IEEE platform of education, publications, conferences & standards to explore new opportunities in the IoT/M2M ecosystem to connect stakeholders Provide a venue where the best minds come together to innovate & work together to advance IoT/M2M technologies for the benefit of humanity
5
Challenges IoT/M2M involves numerous sectors such as the smart home, smart power grid, electronic medical care, intelligent buildings & intelligent transportation Every sector comes with complex & diversified standards & industry standards differ from country to country Complex & diversified standards IoT/M2M has not coalesced to a set of well defined standards though there are many organizations working on various aspects Business models for services are not well defined Interoperability between devices & machines difficult to achieve Not all devices communicate in the same way
6
Next Steps / Actions Continue to lead a series of workshop events worldwide that identify gaps & requirements to assist in developing industry IoT/M2M strategies & programs Leverage the IEEE community of experts & technologist to help address the interoperability challenges in IoT/M2M & implementation challenges
