Marine Biology DAY 4 Drill: Explain why you would need to research fish before placing them all into one aquarium. Outcome: Discuss the types of food chains and webs that exist in a marine ecosystem. Agenda: Discuss interactions between marine organisms Discuss Aquarium Project expectation and rubric
2
Marine Food Web - and – Food Chain
3
Food Chain A straight line of who eats who
They give special names to the order: Producer Primary Consumer Secondary Consumer Tertiary Consumer Quaternary Consumer Producer: Makes their own E (energy) from the Sun Consumers: Eats another organism to get their E (energy)
4
Food Pyramid A food chain be written as a pyramid Has the least E
Trophic Level 5 Quaternary A food chain be written as a pyramid The levels of a pyramid are called trophic levels The bottom starts as trophic level 1 Trophic Level 4 Tertiary Trophic Level 3 Secondary Trophic Level 2 Primary Trophic Level 1 Producer Has the most E
5
Food Chains Food chains will always begin with a producer! Example:
Phytoplankton Zooplankton Sunfish Small Shark Large Shark Food chains will always begin with a producer!
6
Food Chain What would happen if ALL of the zooplankton died?
Large shark What would happen if ALL of the zooplankton died? What would happen if there was an OVER POPULATION of sunfish? Small shark Sunfish Zooplankton Phytoplankton
7
Food Web Multiple food chains put together where multiple organisms can feed on the same prey! This allows for competition. If an organism will not adapt to a new food source it will die! If an organism will adapt to a new food source it will live and possibly migrate and evolve!!
8
Food Chain/Web Worksheet
As a group (or individually) answer the questions on both sides of the worksheet Use your notes, books, and peers. Turn into the bin and pick up a review sheet… you have a quiz next class!!! You should work on your review sheet and make sure you have no questions I want this turned in next class! When you are done and have all questions/comments/concerns answered you can continue working on your aquarium project that is due 2/13/17
