2. Flutes, whistles and ocarinas are known as airduct flutes and they come in many shapes and sizes. Their common characteristic is an airduct assembly, which makes it easier for a novice to play.
Globular flutes with airduct assemblies are commonly called ocarinas, although sometimes such instruments without finger holes are called whistles .
Ancient examples of these instruments have been found in China, India and throughout the Americas.

3. How they Work
An airduct assembly is complicated to build, but easy to play. The edge is a sharpened blade of clay that sits across the aperture from the windway, precisely aligned so that it splits the stream of air coming from the windway.

5. An ocarina has a vessel body that can be almost any shape, and an airduct assembly that causes the vessel to sound.
If the instrument has finger holes, they can be placed just about anywhere on its body, since it’s their size, not position, that determines the pitch they produce.

6. Large ocarinas have a low pitch, while small ocarinas have a high one.
Our ocarina sizes will range from a lime to a small grapefruit.

10. Clay – firm earthy material that is plastic when wet, brittle when dry, and hard when heated

11. Carving – subtractive; cutting or incising material to create form

13. Modeling – additive; manipulating a material (clay) to create form

14. Wedging – A technique in which clay is thoroughly kneaded to remove air bubbles.

15. Score and Slip – To make scratches or creases in pieces of clay to be joined together. Scoring and applying slip (slip = clay + water, and acts like glue) to the roughened surface creates a bond that holds the pieces together.

-must have at least one finger/thumb hole
-should be in the shape of an animal
-will be glazed in ONE color only
-must include both modeling

18. 1. Bevel the tips of wooden sticks to make them effective cutting tools. Use a bench grinder or sharpen them with sandpaper on a flat surface.

19. Once you’ve made the body, create the mouthpiece approximately 1 inch wide by ¾ inch thick and 1½ inches long. It should have squared sides and a slight taper from back to front 

20. Carefully insert the Popsicle stick into the mouthpiece to create the windway (figure 9) The stick must pass through the mouthpiece parallel to the top and bottom surfaces and squarely with the sides. Use slow even pressure.

21. With the windway stick still in place, use another beveled stick to cut the aperture
