Gypsy Book by Arthur Laurents Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim Music by Jule Styne Suggested by the memoirs of burlesque stripper Gypsy Rose Lee, this fast-paced “musical fable” set in the vaudeville circuit of the 1920s and 1930s centers on the ruthless attempt of a stage-mother-to-end-all-stage-mothers to transform her daughters into stars. Featuring an exceptionally strong score that includes such “hit” songs as “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Together, Wherever We Go,” “Let Me Entertain You,” and “Small World”. 呂毓軒 Yellen

Topics For Critical Thinking And Writing
How sympathetic or unsympathetic do you find Rose to be? Do you agree or disagree with the assertion that the ending of the play is sentimental? Could the play end with the conclusion of “Rose’s Turn”? 呂毓軒 Yellen

Topics For Critical Thinking And Writing
Why do you think the transformation of Louise into Gypsy occurs so late in the play, in fact just before the end? Discuss Herbie’s relationship with Rose. Why does he finally abandon her? 呂毓軒 Yellen

Topics For Critical Thinking And Writing
In our postfeminist era how do you assess Rose’s prefeminist situation? Gypsy is a theater work that seems to demand only one style of presentation. But use your imagination to conjure up alternative ways of staging it. Can you conceive of an inexpensive, minimalist production? 呂毓軒 Yellen
