Objectives The aim of the project is to create a European document equivalent of the "Accelerators for America's Future" document (US focus, 5 years old) The focus will be on applications of interest in Europe and for which technology developed for research can have an impact. The document will be entitled "The Applications of Particle Accelerators in Europe” US document is a kind of roadmap for accelerators, this doc is centered in applications. It will be not only a description of the status of each area of application but also the main research areas will be identified, what are the key technologies to be developed and the stoppers , the impact on industry and education and finally some key recommendations 14-15 March 2016 IPAB2016

Objectives It is intended for policy makers, as a result, it will be in two parts: Executive summary, focussing on the main issues for each country and in the correct language (International Committee) Supporting document in English (Conveners) Avoiding duplications with others existing docs in Europe such: the Nupecc report, but exploiting the complementarity and synergies on work already done in Europe: TIARA, Accelerators for Society CERN document Documents from various countries Report will be finished by end of EUCARD2 April 2017 14-15 March 2016 IPAB2016

Electron beam technology is an all-round tool for application in different branches and particularly well established. Mature technology. Processing by e- beams means: -energy efficiency -environmental friendly -long term stability Vacuum or not vacuum processing Could be thermal or non-thermal process Non Thermal: sterilization, printing (décor papers walls..), lacquering (furniture finishing), curing and grafting Thermal: Melting and Evaporation, Welding and Joining, Additive Manufacturing and structure Sintering, surface machining and Structuring Sterilization picture: 106 (25kGy) e beam Disinfection of seeds picture 145 KeV, mA, 12KGy, tons per hour diverse seeds Melting and Evaporation picture: High voltage glow discharge, KeV, 0-15 A Welding and Joining picture: e- beam gun 2KW/60KeV 14-15 March 2016 IPAB2016

In all the cases require accelerators of 10’s kW (for some application MW are needed), 5-10 MeV high wall plug-beam efficiency with lower cost, simpler operation, mobility, compacts and smaller size. 14-15 March 2016 IPAB2016

Next steps and actions We have asked the TIARA support, a presentation of the project will be made in the next TIARA meeting on 6-7 June 2016 in Madrid Other characteristics for full document: Few hard copies, number has to be determined depending on cost, A. Szeberenyi will ask for a cost estimation A pdf copy will be available in the APAE webpage, we will ask for mobile compatibility and electronically digital reading availability If necessary a meeting will be hold at CERN mid-September 14-15 March 2016 IPAB2016

SAC Recommendations SAC fully supports the “Applications of Particle Accelerators in Europe” project, which will provide a document readily accessible and useful for policy-makers and funding agencies. The APAE document will be useful during EuCARD-3 preparations, and in future presentations to the European Commission. We recommend the early identification and involvement of a geographically broad (but numerically small) sample of policy-makers, and other members of the goal audience, who can provide occasional feedback on the scope and depth of the document, throughout its production process. We recommend including in the document a survey – even if approximate – of accelerators: their uses, locations, types, sizes et cetera.
