2 Purpose of Today’s Presentation
Main Objective of today’s Presentation … Provide information about our District’s Title I program for parents of students in the District

3 What is Title I? Federal funds to provide programs to help support children who are struggling in the area of reading Used for a variety of programs and activities designed to increase student academic achievement in the area of reading Funds are distributed to Districts/schools based on the number of low income students, BUT students are selected to receive services based on academic need

4 What is Title I Continued?
Extra help – Supplemental (in addition to what they learn during language arts time in the classroom) Title I services DO NOT replace the core curriculum. Funding provided under No Child Left Behind (NCLB) the name given to the most recent update of the main federal education law

5 Who is a Title I Student? Students identified as “failing” or “at risk of failing” state academic standards Districts set qualification criteria NOT based on poverty – based on need

6 Types of Programs School -wide Program - East Primary School
40% or higher poverty level (74.55%) Approved school-wide plan that is updated yearly and includes parents on the committee/team Not required to identify particular children-all students are considered Title I More flexible use of funds- used to upgrade the educational program in ways that may impact every student in the school

7 Types of Programs Cont. Targeted Assistance– North Primary & South Primary 35% or higher poverty level (As of January 2016: North 33.46% South 44.01%) Students identified or “targeted” for the program based on performance on assessments (need) Assist students with meeting state academic standards in reading and grade level targets Can be a pull-out or push-in program (Pull-out)

8 Reading Intervention Specialists
East Primary – 3.5 Reading Intervention Specialists North Primary – 2.5 Reading Intervention Specialists South Primary – 1 Reading Intervention Specialist 6 of the 7 Reading Intervention Specialists are paid from federal funds Lost 2 Reading Intervention Specialist positions over the course of the last two years due to decrease in Title I funds (trend)

9 Title I Funds in our District
Title I Program Funds Amount of Funds available for current year: $690,215.00 Distributed by need (poverty) Includes money brought over from Title II to help fund full day kindergarten Title I Parent Involvement Funds Amount of funds available for current year: $11,100.00 In order to receive Title I funds, school districts must involve parents in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the Title I program Family Reading Night, Parent Workshops, Kindergarten Kick-Off Sessions How can Title I parents be involved with deciding how funds are spent this year? (Title I PAC)

Title I Part D (Delinquent Programs) $8,898.00 Provide services to the students who reside at the Walker Home (George Jr. Republic) Reading tutoring- Up to 5 hours per week Math tutoring-Up to 5 hours per week Net Nanny (Internet filtering system) STAR Reading & Math (Evaluation tool)

13 Curriculum Our District uses the following curriculum:
Language Arts K-5 Houghton Mifflin Journeys; Grades 6-8 Reader’s Journey Math K-6 McGraw-Hill Science Harcourt In order to help the children achieve the PA Core Standards

14 Assessments use to Qualify Students for Title I Services
Assessments are used to help teachers determine if a student is understanding the content presented in the classroom. We use the following assessments for all of our students: AIMSweb Early Literacy (K-1) AIMSweb CBM & MAZE (1-4) Fountas & Pinnell (F&P) K-4 Journeys Sentence Dictation (K & 1) Kindergarten Screening (K)

15 Proficiency Levels on District Assessments
All of the pertinent assessment data is entered into an excel spreadsheet that ranks the students with regards to “need.” The bottom 10% of the students are offered Title I services. Groups consist of 3-4 students. They are reorganized in January based on updated assessment data. Early Literacy Intervention (ELI) (K) Leveled Literacy Intervention (LLI) (1-4)

16 PSSA Proficiency Levels
Your child will be taking the Pennsylvania System of School Assessment (PSSA) in grades 3-8. Four Proficiency Levels for the PSSA Advanced Proficient Basic Below Basic

17 School Performance Profile (SPP)
School level not district level Title I designated schools: School Reward - High Achieving – Top 5% School Reward – High Progress No Designation Focus School Priority School – Bottom 5%

18 SPP Continued The SPP provides the public with information on how public schools across Pennsylvania are performing academically Impacts the teacher and principal evaluation system Is used for accountability for Title I schools under the state’s approved federal No Child Left Behind waiver. No SPP for the school year except at the HS level (Keystones)

19 Assessment Results You will be notified of your child’s assessment results. The timeline is as follows: PSSA: Fall after the test is taken Fountas &Pinnell: October, January, May AIMSweb: September, January, May

22 Parent’s Rights Under NCLB
