Grade 3 Food Fest 2016
2
Our grade three classes at Beaver Bank Monarch Drive School spent the month of March investigating healthy eating. Here’s what we did:
3
First, we had to go home and find a recipe for a healthy snack food that we could make by ourselves. Some of us even tried it out first with our families. We wrote our snacks down on a recipe card and then we typed them up to make our own recipe book! Now we will have lots of healthy snacks we can make on our own at home.
4
Next, we had to find which of our recipes we could make at school with no stove or oven or microwave. It was okay because we had lots to choose from. We ended up picking five recipes and a tasting station to set up in our classrooms for the Food Fest.
5
Our teachers even found a Nova Scotian recipe for hodgepodge
Our teachers even found a Nova Scotian recipe for hodgepodge. It’s a vegetable chowder.
6
On the day of the Food Fest we began our morning with the hodgepodge
On the day of the Food Fest we began our morning with the hodgepodge. We took turns following the instructions on the recipe card. We chopped, measured, poured and stirred to get it ready for the slow cooker. Then we plugged it in and left it to cook so it would be ready for us to eat at lunch.
7
Then it was time for us to make our snack foods
Then it was time for us to make our snack foods. Each of our groups started at a station with a recipe card and the ingredients and tools we needed. Don’t worry, we washed our hands first and no one lost a finger!
8
We worked together to follow the directions
We worked together to follow the directions. We needed to read first then measure, cut and mix the ingredients. Sometimes we made mistakes but then we figured out what we had to do and tried it again.
9
Sometimes we made things we were pretty sure we weren’t going to like but that was okay. Every time we finished at a station we put our snack on plates to save it for later. We had a lot of work to do. We cleaned up our station and moved on to the next one.
10
At the tasting station we got to try lots of different foods
At the tasting station we got to try lots of different foods. Some we had never seen before. One fruit even looked like tadpole eggs…but we tried it anyway. It was pretty good!
11
At lunch time we took our plates full of food and got to eat everything we had made. We were surprised. Some of the snacks we didn’t think we liked ended up being our favourites! We were pretty full when we went outside to play.
12
When we came back in we smelled something wonderful, but didn’t know what it was. Oh no! We realized that the hodgepodge was still cooking. We had it at the end of the day and it was great! Lots of us went back for seconds. Our teachers were a little surprised that we loved it.
13
We can’t wait to take our recipe books home and try some of the other recipes!
