2 Numbered and shape dice templates are a cheap and effective resources to teach students the concept of whole number. At the materials stage of the mathematics language model (Jamieson-Proctor, 2010). It allows students to identify attributes of numbers and number representations. For example the abstraction concept; the likenesses and differences between object. Questions that can be asked to students: On this die there are 3 dots and on the other die there is the number three. What is similar about the two dice? On this die there is the number 5, and on the other die there is a picture of five flowers on it. What is the difference between the two dice. The dice allows students to practice and reinforce their pre-number processes (skills).

3 ALTERNATIVE TO PAPER DICE
An alternative to using a paper template, is to visit your local foam and rubber store. They often have free off cuts of foam which can be cut into cubes. Students can then create their own dice. This resources is could be used with prep students as the foam is very durable, and easy for young children to throw, catch. ALTERNATIVE TO PAPER DICE

4 Once students have developed concept, skills and strategies for whole numbers, they are able to use the dice as a familiar object to assist them in developing the concept of addition. Using both dice at the same time, students can recognise the symbolic pictures on the numbered die and the subitising picture on the other die. This task would be done during the materials stage of the mathematics language model (Jamieson-Proctor, 2010). Addition
