1 6.1 - Logarithmic Functions
Daily Question: How do you rewrite logs and exponentials? How do you solve logs and exponentials?

2 LOGS EQUAL THE Exponent!

3 Logarithmic Function x = log a y read: “x equals log base a of y”
The inverse of an exponential function is a logarithmic function. x = log a y read: “x equals log base a of y”

4 We can convert exponential equations to logarithmic equations and vice versa, using this:

5 Convert to exponential form
1) 2) 3)

6 Convert to logarithmic form
4) 5) 6)

7 Now that we can convert between the two forms we can simplify logarithmic expressions. Without a Calculator!

8 Simplify “What is the exponent of that gives you 32?”
7. log2 32 2x = 32 x = 5 “What is the exponent of 3 that gives you 27?” 8. log3 27 3x = 27 x = 3 9. log4 2 4x = 2 x = 1/2 10. log3 1 3x = 1 x = 0
