Solutions A Homogeneous Mixture
Questions to Consider: What is a solution? What are the parts to a solution? What are the characteristics of a solution? What is an electrolyte?
2
Solutions Homogeneous mixture of substances in the same physical state
Atoms, molecules, ions are evenly distributed throughout the mixture Can be separated by: Distillation (boiling point) NOT filtration Solvent Solute
3
Types of Solutions – Solid
Solid Solutions Alloy – solid metal atoms are even mixed Brass (Cu + Zn) Bronze (Cu + Sn or Al) Steel (Fe + C) White Gold (Au + Ni) Pewter (Sn + Pb)
4
Types of Solutions – Gas
Gas Solutions Any mixture of gases becomes a gas solution because gases will always spread out evenly Largest Gaseous Solution – Air!
5
Types of Solutions - Liquid
Liquid Solutions Liquid dissolved in a liquid Solid dissolved in a liquid Aqueous – dissolved in water Examples: Contact Solution Salt Water Lemonade
6
Parts of a Solution Solute – Solvent – Universal Solvent – is H2O!!
substance being dissolved; present in smaller amounts Solvent – substance doing the dissolving; present in larger amounts (the liquid) Universal Solvent – is H2O!! Solute Solvent
7
Characteristics of a Solution
Homogeneous mixture of 2 or more substances Cannot be filtered; will not separate Can be distilled Clear – you can see through it Uniform color SOME solutions can conduct electricity (ELECTROLYTES)
8
What is an electrolyte? An electrolyte is an ion that has formed by dissolving an ionic substance in water Electrolytic solutions can conduct electricity (because ions act as electron carriers and complete a circuit)
