12.2 Surface Area of Prism and Cylinders
CAS 8, 9 Goal 1: Finding the Surface Area of a Prism Goal 2: Finding the Surface Area of a Cylinder
2
Prism A prism is a polyhedron with two congruent faces, called bases, that lie in parallel planes. The other faces are called lateral faces. bases
3
Altitude of a Prism The altitude or height of a prism is the perpendicular distance between its bases. Height 2 (Top and Bottom Bases) Height 1 (Left and Right Bases)
4
Right vs. Oblique Prisms
In a right prism, each lateral edge is perpendicular to both bases. In an oblique prism the lateral edges are not perpendicular to the bases. (See picture on overhead)
5
Naming a Prism The name of a prism is the shape of the base
Triangular prism
6
Surface Area of a Polyhedron
The surface area of a polyhedron is the sum of the areas of its faces. The lateral area of a polyhedron is the sum of the areas of its lateral faces only.
7
Net A 2-dimensional representation of all the faces and bases of a prism. (see model)
8
Theorem 12.2 Surface Area of a Right Prism
S= 2B+Ph S- Surface Area B- Area of a Base P- Perimeter of Base h- The distance between the two bases. (or height or altitude)
9
Ex. 1 Find the S.A. of the right Prism
10
Cylinder A cylinder is a solid with congruent circular bases that lie in parallel planes. radius Bases height
11
Theorem 12.3 Surface Area of a Right Cylinder
S=2B+Ch or S- Surface Area B- Area of Base C- Circumference of Base h- Distance between the two bases
12
Ex. 2 Given the S.A. of the right cylinder, what is the height?
