SAFETY IN THE SCIENCE LABORATORY
2
Read instructions before starting experiments
Follow all directions carefully
3
Don’t touch anything until instructed to do so…
4
Perform only those experiments authorized by the instructor…
5
Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the lab…
6
Absolutely no horseplay in the lab!
This is how people get hurt & things break!
7
Keep work areas clean and tidy
Keep aisles clear…
8
Know the locations and operating procedures of all safety equipment
Safety shower
9
The Eyewash station is not a toy…it is only to be used in an emergency!
10
Fire blanket is not used to keep you warm…it is used to smother a you if you are on fire!
11
Fire extinguisher…use only if you know how!
12
Dispose of all chemical waste properly, according to instructions
Clean equipment and work area after use Return all materials to proper location
13
Keep hands away from face, eyes and mouth while using chemicals
Wash hands thoroughly before leaving lab
14
Goggles must be worn at all times during a lab
NO YES
15
Dress properly during a lab
Tie long hair back No dangling jewelry No loose, baggy clothing
16
No sandals (shoes should completely cover top of foot)
Wear lab aprons No contact lenses
17
Report any accident or injury to the instructor immediately
18
If a chemical splashes on your skin, immediately flush with running water and notify instructor
19
When checking a chemical for odors, gently waft vapors towards nose
NO YES
20
Double check labels on chemical bottles
Take only as much chemical as you need Never return unused chemicals to their original containers
21
When diluting acids always add the acid to the water;
“Do as you oughta – add acid to water” A&W Root Beer
22
Never handle broken glass with your bare hands
Use a dust pan and brush Place broken glass in glass disposal container
23
Never use chipped, cracked or dirty glassware
Never leave a lit burner unattended When heating a substance in a test tube, never point the mouth of the test tube at yourself or others
24
Never look down into a container that is being heated
Be careful– hot glass doesn’t look hot!
25
Never pipet by mouth! NO! YES!

Sponge Bob Square Safety!
Directions: The Bikini Bottom gang has been learning safety rules during science class. I will read the following story to you while you are standing. Give a thumbs up if they are doing something right and wave your hands in the air if they are doing something wrong. Good luck!
28
Sponge Bob Square Safety!
SpongeBob, Patrick, and Gary were thrilled when Mr. Krabbs gave their teacher a chemistry set! Mr. Krabbs warned them to be careful and reminded them to follow the safety rules they had learned in science class. The teacher passed out the materials and provided each person with an experiment book.
29
Sponge Bob Square Safety!
SpongeBob and Gary flipped through the book and decided to test the properties of a mystery substance without asking. They remembered that the teacher told them to wear the safety goggles, so they put them on. SpongeBob lit the Bunsen burner and then reached across the flame to get a test tube from Gary. In the process, he knocked over a bottle of the mystery substance and a little bit splashed on Gary.

Sponge Bob Square Safety!
Gary ran over to the safety shower immediately to wash off. Sponge Bob carefully poured some of the substance into a test tube and began to heat it. When it started to bubble, he looked into the test tube to see what was happening and pointed it towards Gary so he could see. Gary thought it smelled weird so he wafted it. He didn’t think it smelled poisonous and tasted a little bit of the substance.

Sponge Bob Square Safety!
They were worried about running out of time, so they left the test tube and materials on the table and moved to a different station. Patrick, on the other hand, took his time to read the directions, put on some safety goggles and picked a couple different substances to work with.
32
Sponge Bob Square Safety!
He tested them with vinegar (a weak acid) to see what would happen even though he didn’t have permission to experiment on his own. He noticed that one of the substances did not do anything, but the other one fizzed. He also mixed two substances together to see what would happen, but didn’t notice anything.
33
Sponge Bob Square Safety!
He saw SpongeBob and Gary heating something in a test tube and decided to do that test. He ran over to that station and knocked over a couple bottles that SpongeBob had left open. After cleaning up the spills, he read the directions and found the materials he needed. The only test tube he could find had a small crack in it, but he decided to use it anyway.
34
Sponge Bob Square Safety!
He lit the Bunsen burner and used tongs to hold the test tube over the flame. He forgot to move his notebook away from the flame and almost caught it on fire. Before they could do another experiment, the bell rang and they rushed to put everything away. Even though he didn’t have much time, Patrick cleaned out his test tube before putting it in the cabinet.
35
Sponge Bob Square Safety!
SpongeBob noticed that he had a small cut on his finger, but decided he didn’t have time to tell the teacher about it. Before class ended, they all washed their hands thoroughly with soap and water. They left their areas neat and clean. However, as they hurried out the door when the bell rang, they left a bunsen burner on in the back of the room.

Coloring Contest of Science!
You should have picked up a new cartoon on your way in…anyone need one? Put your name on either side Choose a side to color your bestest! Color with markers, colored pencils, crayons, highlighters, oils, paints, pens, pastels, etc. On the opposite side, circle the safety concerns Try not to fold, either take with you or give to me to store in class!
