2 Verbs: Review Every sentence has a main verb. We have learned that they can be either ________ or ________ verbs. I bought a new horse. The cookies smelled delicious. action linking

3 Helping Verbs These are verbs that help a main verb finish a sentence.
I bought a new horse. I will buy a new horse. The cookies smelled delicious. The cookies must smell delicious.

5 We use helping verbs to give regular verbs a more exact meaning
We use helping verbs to give regular verbs a more exact meaning. They can change what the sentence means. The rope breaks with too much weight. The rope will break with too much weight. The rope might break with too much weight The rope could break with too much weight. If you were going to use a rope swing, and the sentences above described the rope, which sentence would you feel described the safest rope?

6 Helping Verb Rules Sometimes words separate helping verbs from main verbs. She will not be going to the game. I am also taking the bus. He will never pass this class. x x x

7 Helping Verb Rules NOT is NOT a helping verb.
He is not going to ride the bus to the game.

8 Helping Verb Rules Sometimes forms of “be” can be used as a helping verb, or a linking verb. She is baking some cookies. I am doing my homework. She is a good cook I am smart.

9 Helping Verb Rules Some helping verbs can stand alone. They are considered main verbs when they aren’t used as a helping verb. She has been shopping all day. She has a credit card.

10 Where are the helping verbs?
I did ride the subway today. I did the job quickly. The girls were eating. The girls were tall.

11 Helping verbs and contractions
Think of contractions as two separate words. For example: Isn’t = is not They’re = they are I’m = I am Doesn’t = She’ll = Does not She will

12 Find the helping verb in each sentence
It was raining yesterday. It has not rained yet today. Why can’t you come over to my house? Are schools closed today? She has always been tall. I’ve never seen the ocean.

15 The old cowpoke could always tell a good story.
