Unit 3: Heat and Energy
2
States of Matter 5 states of matter Solid Liquid Gas Plasma
Bose- Einstein Condensates
3
States of Matter Solid Definite shape and volume Crystalline solids
Particles have orderly arrangement of atoms or molecules Examples- Iron, diamonds, ice
4
States of Matter Solids Amorphous solids
Atoms or molecules that have no particular order Examples- wax, gum, silly putty
5
States of Matter Liquids Definite volume but not definite shape
Surface tension- force that holds particles of liquid together Example- water drops on a penny
6
States of Matter Gas No definite shape or volume
Gases can be compressed
7
States of Matter Plasma Bose-Einstein Condensates

10
Kinetic Theory of Matter
Explains the differences between the states of matter All matter is made of atoms/molecules that behave like tiny particles.
11
Kinetic Theory of Matter
2. Particles are always in motion, more motion means higher temperatures. 3. At the same temperature, heavier particles move slower than lighter ones.
12
Identify the part of the Kinetic Theory!
Particles of a solid are tightly packed You can smell food cooking when you walk in the house
13
Identify the part of the Kinetic Theory
Ice is colder than water. The particles of a gas fly past each other Milk at 30 ⁰F has slower moving particles than 70 ⁰ F milk.
14
Identify the part of the Kinetic Theory
A piece of paper is 1 million atoms thick. Cold air sinks, warm air rises. Particles of a liquid move faster than a solid and slide past each other.
15
Identify the part of the Kinetic Theory
Water is made of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom. At absolute zero (-273 ⁰ C) the particles of matter no longer move.
16
Identify the part of the Kinetic Theory
At 10 ⁰ C the particles in lead move slower than the particles of aluminum. At 25 ⁰ C a balloon filled with Helium will float higher than a balloon filled with Neon.
17
Kinetic Theory Lab Look for the 3 parts to the kinetic theory!
Make the Data Table… Time (minutes) Temperature (⁰C) State of Matter (s,l,g) 0:00 0:30 1:00 1:30
18
Kinetic Theory Lab Tiny particles Temperature and speed of motion
