2. April 30, 1970 - President Nixon announces that the US will enter Cambodia.
May 1, Massive war protests occur nationwide. After a protest at Kent State, the city of Kent erupts into riots.
May 2, Ohio National Guard appear to keep order in the city. When they arrive at the Kent State campus the ROTC building is burning down.
May 3, More protests occur on campus. National Guard force students to their dorms and enforce a curfew. Some minor injuries occur.
May 3, Student protesters attempt to prevent the fire department from putting out the fire.

3. May 4, 1970 - Another major protest is planned on campus
May 4, Another major protest is planned on campus. The National Guard attempt to disperse the students. In the chaos, a number of soldiers open fire on students. Four students are killed and nine more are injured.

4. May 5, People died in the hospital, and a guardsmen was admitted. President Robert White had announced on May 4 the University was closed. Students were sent home on May 4. White announces that the University will stay closed through the spring quarter, and start back on June 13.
After

5. The students protested to let President Nixon know that the expansion of the Vietnam War into Cambodia was the wrong move. Students felt that it would make a mockery of his promises at the end of the war. It would also violate Nixon’s neutrality against Cambodia.

6. The protest quicken the withdrawal of American troops from Vietnam, to stop any type of expansion or lengthening of the Vietnam War.
Many colleges and universities across the United States cancelled classes and actually closed their doors for the remainder of the academic year in fear of violent protests erupting on their campuses.
Actions Taken

7. The protest was a success
The protest was a success. The Government took the soldiers out of Vietnam shortly after. In all, 58,282 American soldiers lost their lives and another 303,644 Americans were wounded.
The war continued in south Vietnam but the U S gave no assistance.
Success or Failure

8. Thoreau stated individuals should go against the government and not live by their laws. He also made the claim the government would not listen unless someone dies. The kent state protest was the prime example of Thoreau’s concept. The government did not take action until 4 students was killed and they lost soldiers.
