4 Technology Causes Growth
British inventor Henry Bessemer develops a process to make steel from iron. It is lighter & stronger: replaces Iron. Alfred Nobel invents TNT to speed up construction. Is used for weapons Creates the Peace Prize from profits

5 The New Power Source Electricity replaces steam power.
Michael Faraday invents the 1st Dynamo (generator) Changes the way machines run With the light bulb allows factories to work around the clock.

6 Improved Production Manufacturers start to use interchangeable parts.
Standardized components that can replace each other The Assembly Line is introduced. A product moves down a line of workers. Each one assembles part of the product. Both improvements improve the speed and efficiency of production. More stuff at lower prices.

7 Transportation And Communication Improves
1886 Karl Benz invented the first automobile. Early 1900’s Henry Ford uses the assembly line to make cars affordable to all people. Orville and Wilbur Wright designed and flew the first airplane. Commercial travel begins in the 1920’s. Samuel Morse invents the telegraph. Telephones, radio, and television soon follow.

8 City Life Changes Growing wealth allows city planners to institute Urban Renewal. Poor areas are rebuilt, street are widened, trees are planted, etc. Sewers are added to help protect the water supply. Help improve health. Steel allows soaring buildings to be created. Single family homes are replaced by apartments. More people in the same space

9 Working Class Improvements
Most workers have more money, but not enough to buy homes. Labor Unions slowly become legal around the world. Used strikes to improve working conditions and wages Often caused violence and distrust.
