Glucose tolerance testing. A
Glucose tolerance testing. A. In a normal fasting person, an oral glucose challenge of 75 g produces an increase in the blood glucose concentration and an insulin secretion response during the first 2 hours after glucose ingestion. The resting blood glucose concentration is reestablished within 2 hours. B. Patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus do not secrete insulin in response to a glucose challenge. A plasma glucose concentration of ≥200 mg/dL more than 2 hours after glucose ingestion is diagnostic of diabetes mellitus. U, international insulin units.
