Life Expectancies Life Expectancy Maldon ~ Male 81, Female 84 National Average ~ Male 79.4, Female 83.1 UK life expectancy is average for Europe. Lower than the larger/ Western European economies, but higher than eastern Europe. Life Expectancy Gap Difference most deprived and least deprived deciles Maldon ~ Male 5.0 years, Female 5.3 years Male life expectancies – Highest in Purleigh (85.5),lowest in Maldon East (74.2) Female life expectancies – Highest in Mayland (88.1), lowest in Heybridge West (79.2)

Adult Smoking Levels Circa 10,415 smokers in the district (approx 16.5%, - national average is approx 19%) £19.3m cost of smoking each year to Maldon society Lost productivity (smoking breaks, sick days), health, social care and fires. 7 tonnes of cigarette waste annually in Maldon (>2 tonnes as street litter)

This is a similar pattern as to that seen nationally.

Obesity As a result of increased overweight and obesity, type 2 diabetes has increased. In 2012/13 there were 2,733 recorded cases of diabetes in Maldon (6% Maldon pop). This has increased by 337 cases since 2010/11. (National Av: 6.01%, Essex highest: 7.78% Tendring, Essex lowest: 4.78: Brentwood)* The number of diabetes-related amputations each week in England has now reached an all-time record high of 135!** * Maldon Public Health Profile 2014 **Diabetes UK

Older Adults Hip Fractures In 2012/13 79 Maldon district residents aged 65+ were admitted to hospital for hip fractures, This is 609 per 100,000 of the over 65 population National average 568 per 100,000 over 65’s Falling over 65 – you’re less likely to recover as well or quickly as someone younger

Older Adults Dementia 930 people 65+ in Maldon are thought to have dementia Estimated to rise to 1700 by 2030 Social Isolation Affects Maldon greatly due to rural nature of the district. Measuring social isolation is tricky; measuring loneliness is even more challenging. You do not need to be an older adult to be socially isolated, though age can reduce accessibility and physical ability.
