Lesson 7: Rounding multi-digit whole numbers to the thousands place.
3
Todays Lesson This lesson will focus on how to round numbers to the thousands place. You will be able to accomplish this by using vertical number lines.
4
Let’s start with a problem
We are going to round the number 4,100 to the nearest thousand. First, how many thousands are in 4,100?
5
Problem #1 That’s right there are 4 thousands in 4,100. 4,000
6
Problem #1 That’s right there are 4 thousands in 4,100.
And 1 more thousand would be? 4,000
7
Problem #1 That’s right 1 thousand more would be 5,000. 5,000 4,000
8
Problem #1 That’s right 1 thousand more would be 5,000.
What number is halfway between 4,000 and 5,000? 5,000 4,000
9
Problem #1 That’s right 4,500 is halfway between 4,000 and 5,000.
10
Problem #1 That’s right 4,500 is halfway between 4,000 and 5,000.
Now where would I place 4,100 at on this number line? Place it on your chart. 5,000 4,500 4,000
11
Problem #1 Did you place it around here?
So what is 4,100 closer to? 4,000 or 5,000? 5,000 4,500 4,100 4,000
12
Problem #1 We say that 4,100 rounded to the nearest thousand is 4,000.
5,000 4,500 4,100 4,000
13
Problem #1 What thousand would you round 4,700 to? 5,000 4,700 4,500
4,100 4,000
14
Problem #1 What thousand would you round 4,700 to?
That’s right! We would round 4,700 up to 5,000. 5,000 4,700 4,500 4,100 4,000
15
Let’s try another problem
Let’s try rounding 14,500 to the nearest thousand. How many thousands are there in 14,500? Let’s try another problem
16
Problem #2 That’s right there are 14 thousands in 14,500. 14,000
17
Problem #2 That’s right there are 14 thousands in 14,500.
What would 1 more thousand be? 14,000
18
Problem #2 That’s right one more thousand would be 15,000. 15,000
14,000
19
Problem #2 That’s right one more thousand would be 15,000.
What number would be halfway between 14,000 and 15,000? 14,000
20
Problem #2 That’s right halfway between 14,000 and 15,000 is 14,500.
WAIT, that is the number we are trying to round! What do we do? 15,000 14,500 14,000
21
Problem #2 The rule is that we round up.
So 14,500 rounded to the nearest thousand would be 15,000. 15,000 14,500 14,000
22
Let’s try one last problem
Let’s try rounding 215,711 to the nearest thousand. How many thousands are there in 215,711? Let’s try one last problem
23
Problem #3 That’s right there are 215 thousands in 215,711. 215,000
24
Problem #3 That’s right there are 215 thousands in 215,711.
What would 1 more thousand be? 215,000
25
Problem #3 216,000 1 more thousand would be 216,000. 215,000
26
Problem #3 1 more thousand would be 216,000.
What number is halfway between 215,000 and 216,000? 215,000
27
Problem #3 215,500 is halfway between 215,000 and 216,000.
But where would we put 215,711 on this number line? 215,500 215,000
28
Problem #3 Did you put 215,711 around here?
216,000 Did you put 215,711 around here? What thousand do we round it to? 215,711 215,500 215,000
29
Problem #3 That’s right we round it up to 216,000! 216,000 215,711
215,500 215,000

Practice Practice on your own with numbers 1, 2, and 4 on pages 41 and 42. We will check in 10 minutes.
