Test Prep Practice Answer Day 4
5th EOY Test Prep Practice Answer Day 4
4
Day 4 Overall structure is different in fiction and non-fiction. In fiction, the structure is the narrative elements-plot, conflict, setting, theme, solution, characters etc… In non-fiction it is the text structure. Compare/contrast, chronological (sequence), cause/effect, problem/solution
5
What does overall structure even mean
What does overall structure even mean???? Well, since this is fiction the structure is referring to narrative elements-characters, conflict, solution, characters, setting etc… SO with that being said, let’s look at paragraph 2. (read aloud) This paragraph tells me so much about the setting-it gives me the date, the season even the time! It also tells me that it is the main character’s birthday. I am feeling this paragraph is all about setting, but I want to go through each answer choice. A-there was no problem presented so I can eliminate A. B-well, since there was no problem presented, there can’t have been a solution. C-it introduces characters to me, but it doesn’t describe the characters enough to establish their differences. D-this supports my thinking that the setting is what has been established. I choose D.
6
Carefully read the directions- it asks for a detail that contributes (adds) to the overall structure (in this case-setting) in the SAME way as part A. Let’s look at what we chose again. We said the setting was established and that we learned the date, the season, the time-kinda specific! A mentions the heat, but it is not specific. B and D don’t mention our setting at all so those can be eliminated. C tells me that they lived in the country and even tells us the PLACE. That is pretty specific! My answer is C.

Reading

Task Analysis Observe and Infer Day 5
9
Day 5-Wrap it UP! Using the next 6 slides, allow students to work in a group or in pairs. Although the EOY will not include any written responses, we included one as an option.
10
Observation and Inference Quick Quiz
Time to show off your brain! You will be given a six slides to observe and infer… Ready? Set? GO!
11
1 Look at the picture above. Write one observation about the picture.
Then write one inference based on that observation. Answers will vary but should be based on what can be directly observed in the picture. Responses may include the following: OBSERVATIONS- Water or another liquid is dripping from the fish bowl; water or another liquid is on the floor; there is no fish in the bowl; the cat is smiling; INFERENCES-possible inferences are: the cat put its head in the fishbowl, the cat ate the fish; the cat is happy
12
Observation vs. Inference
2 Observation vs. Inference Scientists must be able to tell the difference between observations and inferences. Which of the following is an inference? The bird has blue feathers and a yellow beak that measures 3 cm. long B. The rodent might be nocturnal because it has large eyes and long whiskers. C. The snake is wrapping its body around its prey. D. The leaf measures 12.4 cm. long B

3 Rainforest Journal 2/16/10 Today I found the body of an unusual frog. The frog might be poisonous because it is very brightly colored. It has a mass of 22.4 grams. The frog is probably a tree climber because it has large round toe pads. I think the frog is a species of poison dart frog because of its size and color.
14
4 A scientist discovers the body of an unknown species of frog in the rain forest of Brazil. She writes several statements in her journal about the animal shown above. Which of the following is an observation about the frog? The frog might be poisonous because it is very brightly colored. It has a mass of 22.4 grams. The frog is probably a tree climber because it has large, round toe pads. I think the frog is a species of poison dart frog because of its size and color. B is the answer
15
5 A student placed 50 mealworms in the middle of an aquarium containing a light, a cardboard tube, and a water dish. He waited 5 minutes and then recorded the data for the first trial in the table above. The student repeated this procedure two more times and recorded the results. Read the results of all three trials. Then, write two inferences you could make about mealworms based on the results. INFERENCE 1- INFERENCE 2- Possible answers-mealworms prefer dark places or enclosed places; mealworms are attracted to cardboard; mealworms do not like water; mealworms do not like light; mealworms can’t climb
16
6 A scientist finds the skeleton of an animal that lived long ago. He observes that the animal had broad, flat teeth and feet with hooves. What is the best inference he could make from his observations? The animal lived in an area with few trees. The animal was a good swimmer. The animal was probably a plant eater. The animal was probably a meat eater. C
17
Written Response What is the difference between an observation and an inference? Give specific examples either from the slides we’ve talked about this week or include your own example. What is the main purpose of inferring when you are reading text? Remind kids it is a two part question and they will need to refer to specific examples from the week or come up with some examples of their own.

Being a Writer Nonfiction Week 1 Day 5
21
Gather at the Carpet with Partners
22
Getting Ready to Write Gather and Briefly Discuss
What do you remember about Rainforests? How is the information organized and presented in Rainforests?
23
Getting Ready to Write Read Aloud and Discuss Part of Rainforests
Show the Glossary Read pages 36-45
24
Brainstorm Topics What were you curious about as you listened to the reading? The author writes about a problem related to the rainforests in these chapters. He describes how the rainforests are being destroyed and how there are efforts being made to save them. You can also write nonfiction that deals with problems in the world and how the problems might be solved.
25
Brainstorm Topics What problems in the world could you explore and write about, and what might you want to find out about those problems? Think Pair Share with your partner Record suggestions on an anchor chart
26
Brainstorm Topics During Writing Time today you may look for information about problems in the world you are curious about, or you may explore other nonfiction topics that interest you. As you read, notice how the information is organized by topic.
27
Writing Time Read Nonfiction Texts
Spend minutes browsing the nonfiction materials and reading about topics you are curious about.
28
Writing Time Writing About Nonfiction Reading
Ask and briefly discuss When reading today, what did you notice about how the information is organized What did you find out from your reading, and what are you curious to know more about? [pause] Turn to your partner
29
Writing Time Write one or two interesting things you found out about a topic today Write one or two things you are curious about Add any new topics that interest you in your writing ideas section
30
Sharing and Reflecting
What problems in the world did you explore today? What did you do to share the materials fairly today? How did that work? What problems, if any, are we still having with sharing materials fairly? What else can we do to avoid those problems next time?
