Overall structure is different in fiction and non-fiction. In fiction, the structure is the narrative elements-plot, conflict, setting, theme, solution, characters etc… In non-fiction it is the text structure. Compare/contrast, chronological (sequence), cause/effect, problem/solution

5. What does overall structure even mean
What does overall structure even mean???? Well, since this is fiction the structure is referring to narrative elements-characters, conflict, solution, characters, setting etc… SO with that being said, let’s look at paragraph 2. (read aloud) This paragraph tells me so much about the setting-it gives me the date, the season even the time! It also tells me that it is the main character’s birthday. I am feeling this paragraph is all about setting, but I want to go through each answer choice. A-there was no problem presented so I can eliminate A. B-well, since there was no problem presented, there can’t have been a solution. C-it introduces characters to me, but it doesn’t describe the characters enough to establish their differences. D-this supports my thinking that the setting is what has been established. I choose D.

6. Carefully read the directions- it asks for a detail that contributes (adds) to the overall structure (in this case-setting) in the SAME way as part A. Let’s look at what we chose again. We said the setting was established and that we learned the date, the season, the time-kinda specific! A mentions the heat, but it is not specific. B and D don’t mention our setting at all so those can be eliminated. C tells me that they lived in the country and even tells us the PLACE. That is pretty specific! My answer is C.
