Electrical Energy Transmission to a Cabin
Created for CVCA Physics By Dick Heckathorn 16 March 2K + 5
2
The Problem You have a cabin in the woods to which you want to add electricity.
3
The Problem You have the option to use a:
12-volt battery that can produce a current of 10-amps or 120-volt electric generator which can produce a current of 1-amp
4
The Problem Each source is connected to the cabin through a cable which has a resistance of 1-ohm Which would you choose?
5
Power Available 12-volt battery 120-volt generator P = I*V
12-V * 10-A 120-V * 1-A 120 watts 120 watts
6
Voltage Drop Across Wire
12-volt battery 120-volt generator V = I*R 10-A * 1-Ω 1-A * 1- Ω 10 volts 1 volts
7
Power Loss Across Wire 12-volt battery 120-volt generator P = I2*R
(10-A)2 * 1-Ω (1-A)2 * 1- Ω 100 watts 1 watt
8
Power Available at Cabin
12-volt battery 120-volt generator Poriginal - Plost (120 – 100) watts (120-1) watts 20 watts 119 watt
