12 Modes of Operation Modes of Operation: describe current state of device Sleep mode: device’s “off” state Minimum power state, but still electricity (else memory lost) Real-time clock is only thing running Doze mode: Intermediate power state Displays available, but no input or active use While viewing information Active mode: Maximum power state Applications running, input and processing While downloading, synchronizing and beaming information

Screen saver mode: inactive desktop, power reduced Energy saver mode: screen powered off, saves energy PC can be completely powered down without losing memory/information

15 Memory Memory: storage area for information, applications, processes and instructions Random Access Memory (RAM) in the Palm Used for permanent memory Erased if power lost RAM in the PC Stores information only when PC in use, erased when powered down Only hard drive memory is permanent Megabytes: measurement of memory units Palm offers 2-16MB

Achieved through USB cradle/sync port (hardware) Conduit programs: cross-check and update PC and Palm to display identical information Most Palm’s operate under PalmOS V3.0 or higher V4.0 supports multimedia, streaming video and audio, and phone capabilities

18 Security Password-protection: machine unusable until correct password entered Virus protection: McAfee and Symantec provide small anti-virus packages When business and personal information becomes more commonly transferred on Palm devices, security will be of increased importance

Hybrid: many wireless device features in one Visor Visorphone attaches to Visor Handspring (uses Palm-OS) Telephone system linked to Handspring’s address book Visorphone can access internet with additional software Kyocera smart phone Tri-mode technology: operates in CDMA, PCS and analog networks Uses Palm platform PDA features: address book initiates calls, etc… Can communicate through infrared

Wireless applications: allow downloads from web without PC connection Wireless internet service and service provider must first be established Web clipping System that downloads miniature versions of web sites Proxy server: receives queries (information requests) and clips data from web site that relates to queries Palm Query Applications (PQA’s) use Query Application Builders to generate queries Wireless applications available for finance, banking, travel and shopping industries Book publishing sales representatives model
