Origins in Ancient Egypt Hieroglyphics (picture writing) carved into clay tablets, sculptures, and walls. Calligraphy means ‘beautiful writing.” Example: The Book of the Dead was a religious book meant to help guide people in passing into the Afterlife.

4 CHINESE CALLIGRAPHY Calligraphy has traditionally been considered the highest art form. Origins back to 3000 BCE or earlier Calligraphers have different styles and spend years perfecting the techniques. Japanese calligraphy developed from Chinese calligraphy, and continues today. 6 Medieval European Manuscripts
Few people could read and write in Medieval Europe. The church trained monks in Latin reading and writing. Artistic monks carefully created copies of the Bible with lavishly illuminated capitals. EXAMPLE: The Lindsfarne Gospels, from late 7th century. It was written and illustrated by the monk Eadfrithe, who later became Bishop of Lindisfarne in 698.

7 Calligraphy Today Example: Contemporary artist Malikanas design from Islamic Art Magazine. He uses digital art and ancient calligraphic styles to create lush images. Modern Computer Fonts mimic Traditional Calligraphy.

8 Weeks Vocabulary Gesture lines – an energetic type of line that catches the movement and gestures of an active figure. Calligraphy – precise, elegant handwriting or lettering done by hand. The word “calligraphic” is sometimes used to describe a line in an artwork that has the flowing elegance of calligraphy. Texture – is the surface quality of an object – for example, whether it is rough, smooth, or scarred. Pattern – is the repetition of a surface element; examples are the stripes on a shirt and the polka dots on a dress.
