Lesson 6: Multistep Ratio Problems

Essential Question: How can you use proportional relationships to solve multi-step ratio problems?

Multi-Step Ratio Problems:
Method 1: Unit Rate Method – Find unit rate and then decide whether you need to multiply or divide to arrive at the answer. Method 2: Cross Multiplication – set up a proportion by lining up your units and use cross multiplication or THE FISH METHOD to solve the proportion.

Practice Problem 1 To make her favorite fruit salad, Charlotte mixes ½ cup of blueberries with ¾ cup of raspberries. She wants to make a 10 cup batch that has the same ratio of blueberries to raspberries. How many cups of blueberries should Charlotte use? How many cups of raspberries should she use?

Practice Problem 2 Julie mixes 5/6 cup of red paint and 1/3 cup of white paint to make a sample of pink paint. She decides it is exactly the color pink that she wants, so she mixes 2 gallons of white paint with some red paint to make the same color. How many gallons of red paint does she use? How many gallons of pink paint does she make?
