For EA1, you will be writing an interview narrative. To prepare for the interview, you will first practice your interview skills by interviewing a partner. 1. First, write down your partner’s name. 2. Next, write down four questions you could ask to learn important information about your partner.

When you interview someone, it is important to ask open-ended questions. Open-ended questions or statements require more than a simple “yes” or “no” response. They give your interviewee an opportunity to provide insight or explanation.

In the following pairs, identify the open-ended question or statement: Explain some of the best parts of playing soccer. Do you like playing soccer? As the youngest child in your family, do you think you get your own way? What are the advantages and disadvantages of being the youngest child in your family?

Revise each of the following to be open-ended. Is it fun to be in the band? Have you always lived in this town?

Turn to page 26. Revise your four original questions/statements to make sure they are open-ended. Write them in the first column. Now interview your partner and record their responses in the second column. Try to record a combination of direct quotes (their answer verbatim) and indirect quotes (paraphrasing their response).

Preparing to Introduce Your Partner
The hardest part of any presentation can be the beginning. You might begin by saying: I would like to introduce ____________ I would like you all to meet _____________ This is my new friend _____________ The other challenging part of any presentation is closing. You want to leave a strong final impression. You might end by saying: I enjoyed getting to talk to ________________ because _____________ __________________ is an interesting person and I’m glad I got a chance to meet my partner because ___________________

Writing Your Introduction
Now that you have the beginning and ending, you need to fill in the middle Avoid listing your information. Be sure to include at least ONE direct quote. Try incorporating the TLQ (Transition + Link + Quote) strategy. Avoid referencing the questions. Focus on the responses. Avoid 1st person as much as possible. This isn’t about you Instead of saying “One thing I learned about _____ is…” Say __________’s favorite activity is …” Instead of saying “When I asked __________ about ...” Say “Moreover, ___________ lit up when she started talking about …” Your goal is to capture the voice of your partner. Length: One paragraph will do (8+ sentences). Longer is ok Make your partner look good!

Homework Finish your paragraph. Practice reading it a few times.
It does not have to be a chunk, but try to layer your ideas. Do NOT just list the questions and answers. Challenge yourself to not include the question at all……… Practice reading it a few times. Read it out loud! Read it to an audience. Read it to yourself in front of a mirror. It works! MAKE EYE CONTACT! Be ready to present tomorrow Grades: You present. You do more than just read. You use at least one direct quote. You have a beginning, middle, end. Your introduction shows effort

Why are the marigolds so important to Miss Lottie? And why do the children hate them so much? What things occur that contribute to Lizabeth’s internal conflict? After reading “Marigolds,” what inferences were you able to make about Lizabeth? How is this a “coming of age” story?
