La Porte High School FFA
Re-established: 2015

What is FFA? The National FFA Organization was first established in 1928, in Kansas City, Missouri. The letters F.F.A. originally stood for Future Farmers of America, but, over the years, it has changed to The National FFA Organization. The named was changed in 1988 because FFA is not just for students who want to be production farmers; FFA also welcomes members who aspire to careers as teachers, doctors, scientists, business owners and more.

The Mission Statement “FFA makes a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth, and career success through agricultural education.”

La Porte High School FFA
After nearly 30 years of not having an FFA Organization at La Porte High School, the agricultural teacher, Mr. Robert Walker, restarted the program in January 2015. Mr. Walker has introduced many new classes to the high school such as Intro to agriculture, advanced animal science, landscaping, and next year we hope to have an agricultural mechanics class. The first year of the program the LaPorte FFA had nearly 50 members join. This year we have around 68 members. In the FFA program we compete in Soil Judging, Livestock Judging, and Forestry Judging.

Community Service Project
For our community service project we decided to help the Pax Center. We purchased the food and also donated money for upcoming community meals. The Pax Center is a place where individuals and families dealing with difficult life circumstances can be assisted through the food pantry, community meal & resource center. Helping at the Pax Center taught us how to prepare a meal for almost 100 people in under 2 hours and also how to work as a team to achieve a goal.

Our Ag Plot The FFA and agriculture classes for the high school have a plot of land for planting crops located next to the La Porte Educational Service Center Building. Last year we planted sweet corn and sunflowers, which we sold at the local farmer’s market. This year we planted sweetcorn and pumpkins. We harvested 180 pumpkins and donated some of them to the Handley Elementary students. We also served the sweetcorn at lunch for LPHS students and staff to enjoy.
