1. Define the central ideas of the Enlightenment and its’ philosophers 2. Understand how Enlightenment ideas spread beyond Europe Importance: The ideas from this time period had a great influence on the colonists during the American Revolution and some are still present in our society.

Deism- a religious philosophy based on reason and natural law/opposed supernatural revelation Social contract- A concept proposed by Rousseau that an entire society agrees to be governed by the general will, and all individuals should be forced to accept the general will since it represents what is best for the entire community Salon- gathering place that helped spread Enlightenment ideas Laissez-faire- “let the [people] do [what they will]”

Goal: You will work in groups to learn more in depth about the philosophers and their importance in the Age of Enlightenment. You will share your findings with the class.

1. Take notes on the background information sections of your chart as your classmates present their findings. Take notes that make sense to you and abbreviate as possible Ask questions, by raising your hand

23 Main ideas gallery walk directions:
1. With your group members, look through your philosopher notes, discuss your findings, and determine if you can add any information to any of the topics posted in the parchment paper. 2. Add information to the topic paper. Make sure your handwriting is large and neat enough for others to read. 3. You will only have 5 minutes in each station, so make sure to be productive. 4. When the timer goes off, move on to the other station and repeat. This time you will need to copy information as other groups have written onto your philosophers chart handout. 5. This will continue until everyone has had a turn in each station.
