20 Procedure Reading Structure Final Test

21 At a family gathering, we were all sitting around
the dinner table when my five-year-old niece said, "I've finished all my pig chops." It made us all laugh. My niece looked puzzled and unhappy. Then my uncle started to explain.

22 "We don't say 'pig chops.' We say 'pork chops.' We use one word for the animal when it's alive. We use another word when it appears on our table.“ =the animal This difference in words all goes back to English and French history. (프랑스사람들) In 1066 the French invaded England.

23 They brought their customs and language with
them. As a result, two languages were spoken in one country at the same time. (=England) Since the English looked after the farm animals, the animals were still called 'cows' and 'pigs.'

24 However, when they appeared on the table of
the French, they became 'beef' and 'pork.' These words came from the French language. ~에서 유래했다 There are many other English words that came from different languages. For example, the word 'hamburger' is from German.

25 The hamburger came from Hamburg, a city in
Germany. It became famous and popular when it was brought to America in about 1850. The pie chart below shows that a lot of English words came from other languages.

26 For example, about 29 % of all English words
are from French, and about 29 % of English words are from Latin. (풍부한) English is rich and interesting since it is a mixture of different languages.
