1 Bellringer Help Penguin Pirate find the BURIED TREASURE!
Use the directions and the map to help you. Draw your path and Circle the Tree where the treasure is hidden. 1.) Penguin takes 4 spaces East (right) 2.) 4 spaces diagonally Southwest (down/left) 3.) 7 spaces North 4.) 2 spaces West 5.) 3 spaces South – TREASURE How far did Penguin Pirate Go?? This should be a pretty good hook/introduction for displacement vs. distance. Students will likely give varying answers that demonstrate distance and displacement… Let’s use this as the jumping point to define both terms!

2 Day 1 – Distance and Displacement
Unit 2 - Motion Day 1 – Distance and Displacement

3 Objective and Essential Question
SWBAT contrast displacement and distance How can one object move from one place to another, but have a different distance and displacement?

4 Scalar or Vector? When we talk measurements, we care about two things:
Direction Magnitude If it only has Magnitude, it is called Scalar Ex. Distance, Speed, Time If it has BOTH DIRECTION AND MAGNITUDE, it is called Vector Ex. Displacement, Velocity, Force

5 Displacement displacement xi xf A train moving in a straight line along a track is considered one-dimensional motion The train starts at an initial position, xi, and ends at a final position, xf. The change in position is called the displacement

6 Displacement yf ∆y = yf - yi xi xf ∆x = xf - xi yi ∆ = delta = “change” Displacement = final position (xf) – initial position (xi) *Important formulas

7 Displacement Displacement can either be positive or negative
Negative displacement Positive displacement 10m 30m 50m 70m xf-xi = 10m-40m = -30m xf-xi = 70m-40m = 30m Displacement can either be positive or negative

8 Displacement Displacement does NOT always equal distance traveled x1
x3 = xf 10m 30m 50m 70m Displacement = 50m-10m = 40m Distance = 20m+40m+20m = 80m Displacement does NOT always equal distance traveled

9 Distance vs. Displacement
Distance is a number without a direction. DISPLACEMENT = Displacement gives a number and a direction. Ex. A man walked to a store 2 miles North of his house ← tells _______________________ A man walked 2 miles from his house ← tells _______________________ displacement distance

10 Check for Understanding
1 lap= 400m 1600m = 1 mile A person runs 4 laps around a track. What’s their displacement? Distance? Start/stop Displacement = Distance = 1 mile

11 Displacement – Check for Understanding
22 km 32 km 35 km What is the total displacement and distance if you… Go from home to school Ditch school and go to the beach, then run home to tell your parents how much you learned at school today Forget school, just go straight from home to the beach, and then back home

12 Independent Practice This should be completed in class
