Not to replace formal education!
Objective To develop a set of resources to support European dietitians intending to use or already using behaviour change theory and techniques in practice Not to replace formal education!
10
Scientific basis Developed by Susan Michie and colleagues at University College London, mainly for research purposes
11
Engagement with dietitians
Questions What do dietitians know about behaviour change? What would they like to know more about? What sort of resources would be useful? Workshop 1 Sep 2014, Athens, Greece 20 practicing dietitians from 7 European countries Survey Q1 2015, online 589 dietitians from 28 European countries
12
Survey – findings (I) Of 589 dietitians: Findings
36% - practice less than 5 years 48% - received training in behaviour change techniques 19% - undertook Life Long Learning in behaviour change Findings 58% agreed to be confident in their knowledge of the evidence base for behaviour change 27% were not confident that they knew what techniques were most helpful to change weight related behaviours 37% agreed that information about behaviour change for weight loss was confusing – 29% disagreed 88% agreed that they would value more information about the evidence base for behaviour change for weight loss
13
Survey – findings (II) Behaviour Change Techniques
Most used when appropriate Setting goals – 87% Problem solving – 80% Feedback – 83% Shaping knowledge – 79% Would like to know more about these BCTs Comparison of behaviour – 37% Regulation – 41% Antecedents – 43% Identity – 46% Covert learning 50%
