2 Summary This story begins with Montresor stating that he had been insulted by his friend Fortunato and seeks revenge on him. One day at a carnival Fortunato is drunk and dressed up as a clown. Montresor takes advantage of his opportunity to avenge himself. Fortunato is convinced by his friend to go down to the catacombs and try some wine. While both men are walking down to the Amontillado, Fortunato starts to cough. Montresor uses this to fuel his friends urge to see the cask. When they arrive their destination Montresor tells Fortunato to go in the small room where the wine is stored. When he steps in the room Montresor chains him to a wall and starts to cover the wall up. At first Fortunato laughs because he is just kidding, but what he soon came to realize that this was no joke. Now Montresor sealed in the last stone and said –May he rest in peace!

3 Conflicts Person vs. Person conflict.
Fortunato has hurt Montresor many times and one day insulted him very badly. Now Montresor seeks revenge for what he has done.

4 Setting The time period this story takes place is in the Medieval times. Montresor takes Fortunato beneath the city streets of Europe into the catacombs. The catacombs was where a very great portion of the story occurred.

5 Theme General- Death and revenge
Specific- Since Montressor was insulted, back then the only way to settle disputes was to cause them suffering.

6 Literary Elements Symbol: The pipe. The pipe eventually lead to Fortunado’s death. Hyperbole: When they talked about the Amontillado being the finest wine in the world. Atmosphere :The cask of amontillado is a dark and gloomy story.

7 Questions How does Montresor plan to kill Fortunato?
Why is Fortunato such an easy target? During the climax of the story how does Montresor feel? What is a cask of Amontillado? What time period does this story take place in? Does Montresor ever second guess himself? What object did Montresor hide in his jacket?

8 Answers Montresor takes many steps to make sure his plan to kill Faurtuano will work, he made sure none of his housekeepers were home and he kept giving Fortunato wine to drink so he would be very drunk. He is such an easy target because he doesn't have a filter, he tells everybody anything and everything about himself and other people too. A. He is depressed B. He is hungry C. He is doubtful D.
