A. Natural Rights Philosophy is based on imagining what life would be like if there were no government(State of Nature).

People are selfish
Strong would abuse

Life, Liberty, Property

5. 3. How do people running the gov. get their power?
Consent

6. 4. What kinds of gov should be respected?
Only ones that protect the people’s rights

7. 5. Life in a “State of Nature” would be terrible and insecure.

8. 6. Social Contract
People give some of their rights to the government in order to secure the most important rights

9. 7. If the gov. fails to uphold these rights, then the contract is broken and overthrow is justified.

10. II. Thomas Hobbes
A. Humans overcame this “Nasty and Brutish” life by creating an absolute government.

11. B. People surrender their rights for the sake of self preservation

12. C. Hobbes view of social contract?
If you shut up and do as you are told, you have the right not to be killed
