1
Biogenesis vs. Spontaneous Generation
Spontaneous Generation- Life apears spontaneously. Biogenesis- Life generates from life. Which is True?
2
Developing a Controlled Experiment
Does Life Just Appear Out of Nowhere? Developing a Controlled Experiment
3
What is involved in generating a controlled experiment?
Identify the problem/question you are trying to solve. Does life spontaneously arise? Let’s see if bacteria will just grow on these plates spontaneously. Identify Variables-things that may change your results. Controlled Variable-unchanging, serves as the basis of comparison. Petri plate, temperature of incubator, Manipulated Variable-variable that is deliberately changed. Responding Variable-changes in response to manipulated variable. To swab or not to swab…That is the question.
4
What would you see? Swabbed with bacteria Not swabbed with bacteria
5
Redi’s Experiment with Spontaneous Generation
6
What were his controlled variables?
Type of jars, temp, meat What were his manipulated variable? GAUZE What was the responding variable? The Appearance of maggots
