To Our JA Volunteer: Thank you! For your time to inspire students to succeed in making connections to their futures after graduation.
This power point presentation is the 2nd part of a series for students who have had a previous JA Program how to get a job/the choices they make today about first impressions, social media, drugs/alcohol and even graduation affect their employability in a presentation called Hire Me! There a several slides at the end that give you a chance to remind them about these topics to close out your session. There is also an entitlement video (3 minutes) that you can play to remind them of employer expectations.
TODAY YOU PRESENTATION IS DESIGNED TO INSPIRE & ENCOURAGE STUDENTS ABOUT KEY TOPICS SUCH AS: OPPORTUNITY, NETWORKING, HOW TO HANDLE MISTAKES WHEN APPLYING FOR A JOB, PERSERVENCE, HONESTY & STABILITY and how these affect employability.
THIS OPENING SLIDE IS DESIGNED TO CAUSE ACTION: A STUDENT or SOME STUDENTS TO TAKE ACTION & STAND UP! It is intentionally subtle. Please Don’t tell them.
After Class Starts. Introduce Yourself. Share Your Work Title & Company and explain that you Hire People – give a statistic of how many per year, then month, then week to help students understand your relevancy in the community to their ability to be employed.
If any STUDENT or a GROUP of STUDENTS STOOD UP… Please ask them to join you at the front of the room if space permits. See next slide on the activity to do with them.

Explain: One of the most important things that will help you be successful is to recognize an Opportunity (Click for word to appear)

Suggestions for conversation – the value add of this entire presentation is your real world of work experiences. Opportunities are the things in life that can catapult you forward if they work out. Why do people not take on a challenge …because they're afraid of failure. Describe one or two things that are important opportunities to take advantage of when preparing for college, work or the military (internships, open houses, job fairs) OR share a personal story of an opportunity you took as a young person that helped you succeed.
Explain that without failure nothing new can be gained. Only if YOU are willing to take risks and work hard at YOUR goals will YOU break through and succeed.

Have the audience applaud the students that actually STOOD UP. You have two $10 Subway Gift Cards to give away per session. It is important for students to SEE that Rewards come with taking advantage of Opportunities. You can decide how to award the Gift Card if more than one student stands up – tie it to applying for a job scenario and how the those who apply have a better chance to SUCCEED.

3. Meet more people
Every classmate, every teacher, every coach, every business person, everyone you meet becomes part o your network.
Create f a network Of PEOPLE that can help you reach your goals.
Explain that: Another way to Be A Success Is To Meet More People.
Expand upon the importance of network. If you are teaching this class later in the day at a JA in A Day program, more students probably Stood Up! THAT’s a good thing, because it means the students in the earlier classes TALKED about their experience to other students.
Use this as an example of Networking.
Explain how knowing more people helps you find career and scholarship opportunities. Share examples from your workplace about referrals.
Help them feel connected to you that you are now part of their network through this presentation and if you want to, invite students to take your business card after the presentation. BRING BUSINESS CARDS You may have to explain how the business card is a tool in the business world to make connections and obtain contact information =
Encourage students to make their own to hand out to people they meet – especially adults who can help them get hired.

4. What are some things you can do in high school to meet more people?
This is open-ended to fit the discussion of your group.
Try to encourage students to provide answers.

SOME COMMON ANSWERS:
Student Organizations, part-time jobs,
Share how your business looks for teamwork skills through groups, clubs, sports activities have participated in and why.
Encourage students to get involved connecting how that will benefit them in the future as they try to gain employment.
Suggestions for conversation: When it comes to opportunities, it’s often who you know and not what you know. Imagine someone looking for a job. One person has a network of five close friends and a few acquaintances and another has 30 friends and numerous acquaintances.
If their qualifications are identical, it’s much more likely that the person who knows more people will get hired first.

Another set of skills important to employers is your ability to have 21st Century Soft Skills – YOUR ATTITUDE, Not the technical things you learn for a job.
Emphasis how important having these skills will make YOU stand out.
As a business person who hires and fires, you can really help students understand that these are REALLY important skills for successful employability. That at the workplace, no matter what job you do, even computer jobs – you have to work with people.

Share your own experiences about how many people apply for a single job and what qualities help a candidate be successful.
NOTE TO VOLUNTEER: Through JA Career Success classes taught in the classroom, these students will work on activities that will help them practice these skills.

6. Stick with things – don’t quit

Stability is a key asset in employability
Everyone is scared: 66% of teens are afraid of the future or life after graduation.
Believe in yourself that YOU CAN SUCCEED
Use your network!
As an employer – Another way to make you competitive is to have Perseverance.
Everyone faces challenges. The key to life success is to push through, pull yourself up and move forward.
It also makes you stand out to an employer when you have longevity on your resume – meaning you were part of a team, a club, or the same job for multiple years.
Know what you want out of life. If you know what you want out of life.
Stability is a key asset in employability

7. I made a mistake in high school
I made a mistake in high school. I should hide it on an application or during an interview?
Explain how important it is not to lie on your application or during an interview.
Help students understand appreciate how being HONEST is valued in the workplace.
Own it.
Learn from It.
Give examples that are important to your business.
NOTE TO VOLUNTEER: The next slides gives you an opportunity to talk about PERSONAL BRAND and how choices they make affect THEIR BRAND. The slide background changes because this is information they were shown through the first presentation.

8. Never Lie. Own It. Learn From It. Explain How You Changed.
Connect how employers ask interview questions to provide you opportunities to explain difficult situations.
Emphasis how we all make mistakes – we are human.
The mistake, give examples that you hear about during interviews: ie failed a class, got caught stealing, was in a fight a school, …
Whatever it is, the important thing to employer is what you say and DID to learn from it. Show perseverance and how you grew as a person to be better than before the mistake?
Explain How You Changed.

9. Motivate students to understand that everything they do today will impact their future. Being on time to class, prepared, participating sets up you up for success in for college scholarships and in the workplace. These become transferrable skills employers expect for on time attendance and a good work ethic to help the company succeed.
Share how you view high school students/graduates who have a missed a lot of school.
How does your company view social media posts?

10. Can YOUR words & actions on Social Media impact YOUR employability?
Social media can be your friend or your enemy. About a quarter of employers surveyed by the Society of Corporate Compliance and Ethics in 2009 had disciplined an employee for improper activities on social networking sites. If a worker posts something negative, and a manager finds it, he or she can legally be fired, some employment attorneys say. Let’s look at some actual cases are on the next slide.

12. Help students understand how important a drug-free workplace is to your company.
Reinforce that choices made today impact their future ability to make money and support themselves.

13. What About Tattoos & Piercings?x
Choice Wisely where you place a frog tattoo!
You must meet your employers’ expectations and many workplaces prohibit visible tattoos and piercing – be prepared to cover them up or remove them.
Be factual in that as a young person they have to make many choices – and how peer pressure and wanting to fit in can cause you to make decisions TODAY that will have long-term consequences in the REAL WORLD OF WORK.
Address how your place of business address tattoos and piercings.
Are they permitted? If yes, are they expected to be covered up?

14. There is a lot of talk about entitlement

You show the video again (about 3 minutes) if desired and time permits.
Among the top reasons people have difficulty getting a job and keeping it have nothing to do with their skills but everything to do with attitude. Let’s see – view video.

You can ask students to share what actions they taken to prepare for Employer Expectations If you get no response, you can ask, Can someone tell me what entitlement means? How many of think that having a degree entitles you to a job? Do you think employers are entitled to certain things from employees?
On The next slide you can explain about your business and your expectations and what jobs you have available for high school students.

Expand upon your place of business and hiring policies, and the jobs you have at your business with various types of degrees – high school, college, additional training.
Do you hire high school students and if so, at what age and how do they apply?
