8. Intergovernmental Organizations IGO
Formal institutions made up of member sovereign states or of other intergovernmental organization
Can be multi- or general-purpose, taking up any international issue, such as the UN.
Or have narrow mandate focusing on a specific economic, political, social or military issue, examples: ILO, WHO.
Examples: UN, EU, NATO, IMF (Int’l Monetary
Fund).

9. Non-governmental Organization NGO
Private, nonprofit organizations funded through membership dues, charitable contributions, private donations
Engage in a variety of international activities
Types of NGOs (alternative names):

volunteer sector
grassroots organizations
