1 Elements of Art and Principles of Design
What is ART? Elements of Art and Principles of Design

2 Elements of Art and Principles of Design
The Elements of Art are the building blocks used by artists to create a work of art with the visual components of Line, Shape, Form, Value, Space, Color, and Texture. The Principles of Design describe the ways that artists use the elements of art in a work of art with Balance, Emphasis, Rhythm & Movement, Proportion, Unity, Pattern& Repetition, and Variety; the means an artist uses to organize elements within a work of art.

3 Elements of Art- Line Line is An element of art defined by a point moving in space. Line may be two-or three-dimensional, descriptive, implied, or expressive.

4 Elements of Art- Shape An element of art that is two-dimensional, flat, or limited to height and width. Shapes can be geometric, like squares and circles; or organic, like free-form or natural shapes.

5 Elements of Art- Form Forms are three-dimensional shapes expressing length, width, and depth. Balls, cylinders, boxes, and pyramids are forms.

6 Elements of Art- Value The lightness or darkness of tones or colors. White is the lightest value; black is the darkest. The value halfway between these extremes is called middle gray.

7 Elements of Art- Space Space is the area between and around objects. The space around objects is often called negative space; negative space has shape. Space can also refer to the feeling of depth. Real space is three-dimensional; in visual art, when we create the feeling or illusion of depth, we call it space.

8 Elements of Art- Color An element of art made up of three properties: Hue, Value, and Intensity.

9 Elements of Art- Color Hue: name of color
Value: hue’s lightness and darkness (a color’s value changes when white or black is added) Intensity: quality of brightness and purity (high intensity= color is strong and bright; low intensity=color is faint and dull)

10 Elements of Art- Texture
An element of art that refers to the way things feel, or look as if they might feel if touched.

11 Principles of Design- Balance
A way of combining elements to add a feeling of equilibrium or stability to a work of art. Major types are symmetrical and asymmetrical.

12 Principles of Design- Emphasis
Emphasis is the part of the design that catches the viewer’s attention. Usually the artist will make one area stand out by contrasting it with other areas. The area could be different in size, color, texture, shape, etc.

13 Principles of Design- Rhythm& Movement
A principle of design that indicates movement, created by the careful placement of repeated elements in a work of art to cause a visual tempo or beat.

14 Principles of Design- Proportion
Proportion is the feeling of unity created when all parts (sizes, amounts, or number) relate well with each other. When drawing the human figure, proportion can refer to the size of the head compared to the rest of the body.

15 Principles of Design- Unity
A way of combining similar elements in an artwork to accent their similarities (achieved through use of repetitions and subtle gradual changes). It is the feeling of harmony between all parts of the work of art, which creates a sense of completeness.

16 Principles of Design- Pattern & Repetition
Pattern is the repeating of an object or symbol all over the work of art. Repetition works with pattern to make the work of art seem active. The repetition of elements of design creates unity within the work of art.

17 Principles of Design- Variety
Variety is the use of several elements of design to hold the viewer’s attention and to guide the viewer’s eye through and around the work of art.

18 Let’s go back to our first question…
What is ART? How do you know when something is not art?
