1 Unit 20: Music and Sound for the Moving Image
Structures: storyboard; internal structure; pace; edits; titles Task: You have been asked to create a audio/visual presentation that analyses a range of moving image based material (movie, trailers, TV ads ,etc) identifying audio and visual elements. Your presentation should address the following features: Audio components: music; atmospheres; sound effects; voice tracks; temp tracks Visual components: animations; live footage; stills; logos and titles Structures: storyboard; internal structure; pace; edits; titles

2 Storyboard What is a storyboard?
A storyboard is graphic organiser of illustration and images that shows what is going to happen. Storyboard is an written explanation of scenes that will be filmed. Under the pictures there are explanations of pictures that tell what exactly it is. This is an example of what is an storyboard.

3 This is the title of the scene. It has the length of the scene ‘1:02’. In this image you can see the car, a man and a rabbit inside the car and a police behind them. In this image you can see that car is going in a alley way. In this image you can see there are 2 police going to a alley way going after the car. In this picture you can see the other car hits polices. In this picture you can see that the car goes away.

4 Pace What is pace? Pace is while editing a film is where a speed goes up or down in certain parts of scenes. This is and example of slow pace. They used slow music because the scenes is longer. The tempo of the song is slow. Dynamics started to get louder when they make eye contact. The singer sings the song slowly as they keep looking at each other. In some parts where they kiss or make eye contact dynamics gets louder but in other parts music gets calm. The style of the music is romantic, because they choose the song depending on the scene and the movement of the characters. For example the music is calm when they make eye contact or when Romeo talks to his self when he sees Juliet. However music starts to get louder, there are more instruments playing louder when Romeo and Juliet are together.

5 Internal Structure: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plMyVJnmdGg
I am using a clip from ‘Hunger Games’ to demonstrate internal structure. The music that they have used at the start of the scene for 13 second, it tells that it is time for her to go to stage. You can tell from the music that she is going to the stage because of the sound that people make form background and the music that they have been used. The music stops for few seconds and there are only just background sound where you can hear people cheering and the man talking so after when she walks trough the door and the doors open the music starts to play but this time dynamics change. It starts to build up when she walks and when she gets on the stage music stops. For a while they have just used the background sound and when she is ready to perform the music comes back in again. When music comes in at 2:05 second, the dynamics of the music stays the same for a while and when she is about to finish her performance it starts to build up a bit but it changes part to part where it gets louder and quitter. Nearly the end after men talks the music comes and it start to build slowly through to the end.

6 Edits What is editing in film music?
The music will be written depending on the mood of the scene. It will be edited together to represent the mood changing in the scene. How has editing been used in this film clip? The editing in this film clip is cut quickly to represent the pace of what’s going on in the story.

7 Titles https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oWEPGNjDi1M What are titles?
Titles tells you the name of the film, the company that produced, and the actors that has been take part in the film. Why are they important? It is important because it gives you a bit of information about the film. How are they used in this clip? They used to show the actors names and everyone else that worked in the film. Name of the film, writer of the film, the music.

10 Animation What is animation?
the technique of photographing successive drawings or positions of puppets or models to create an illusion of movement when the film is shown as a sequence. How has animation been used in the clips you have seen? I have seen 2 animations. One was ‘Rogger Rabbit’ and one was ‘Pingu’. They were both animation but they had different styles. Rogger Rabbit was footage animation which was mixed with real life and animation. Pingu was animation where someone draw the pictures and bought it to life. What type of music and sound effects can be used alongside an animation? In both animation there were simple music. The tempo was changing depending on the actions. Pingu had no sense of talking and Rogger Rabbit had the normal talking.

11 Live footage What is live footage?
Footage is something you film that’s live. How is this different to animation? Footage is different compare to animations because animations when people draw thing and bring it to life but footage is when you film things that’s live. What type of productions use live footage? Age relevant films such as actions films, romance films, comedian films. Children will likely to watch animate films. What type of productions use both animation and live footage together? Comedy, children films. Adults more likely to want to watch live films. These kind of movies more like real life not as childish.

A film still is a photograph taken on or off the set for a movie or television program during production. Where would a still be used in a production? They might take pictures to show what the characters are looking like. They might take a picture to use in adverts. They can also consist of posed or candid images taken on the set during production, and may include stars, crew members or directors at work to show the back stage of the set. This helps people to get an idea about what is the film about, who takes part in film or if the picture is taken from back stage this helps people to get an idea about what have they done at the back stage. Can you give an example of a still being used in a production? This is an example of Romeo and Juliet pictures taken from the scene.

13 Logos and Titles What are logos? Where are these used within a film?
Logo is a graphic mark or a symbol to show the organisation or the company of the product. Where are these used within a film? At the start or end of the film or a movie. They show the logo before the title or at the end of the film.

A sound, speech or a music made for se in a play or a film. A foley artist is a person who records sound effects during post production. We have Foley artist to mimic the sounds that’s in the scene. At 0:36 second we can hear the sound where the man puts the wood down. At 0:46 second we can hear the sound where Pink Panther pick up the paper. At 0:49 and 0:59 second we can her the sound where both crumble the papers. At 1 12 second we can hear the man falling down and after the hammer falls down on his head. This is an example of a background sound. The background sound is different compare to sound effect. Foley artist is a person who mimic the sound such as cars passing, paper crumble so that’s what we call sound affect. However background sound is more constant. It’s the sound that people are not focusing on.

15 Sound Effects Find an example of hard sound effects (cars, sirens, gunfire) and discuss how they are used. (Find the clip with gun shots…) Find an example of designed effects (that don’t usually occur in nature – Sci Fi.) Discuss how they are used. ( stars) they made up with imaginary.

16 Temp Tracks What are temp tracks? A temp track is a piece of music and an audio track which is used for film production. It serves as a guideline for the mood or the atmosphere the director is looking for in a scene.
