1 What is Tenshiki? 転失気

2 In our everyday life, going to the bathroom is very important.
Especially passing gas.

pi--, quiet ones are usually smelly. su--, very quiet ones are very dangerous.

4 Main story begins.

5 This is an episode about a monk. (osyo)
He calls a doctor for an examination since he is not feeling well.

6 The doctor realizes that his lower stomach is bloated.

7 “Your stomach looks bloated. Have you had tenshiki recently?”

8 The monk has never heard the word tenshiki before.
Since he is a Mr. Know-it-all he pretends that he does know.

9 “When I was young, I had tenshiki all the time but being old I haven’t had one recently.”
“I see. I will prescribe you some medication. Take care.”

10 The monk cannot stop thinking what tenshiki is.

11 “So, what is a tenshiki? I should of just asked but I couldn’t admit that I don’t know.”

12 “I know. I’ll ask Chin’nen
“I know! I’ll ask Chin’nen. (errand boy) He’s young but knows a lot, and if he doesn’t know I’ll use him to find out. “ “Chin’nen, bring me a tenshiki?”

13 “What is a tenshiki?” “I just taught you the other day. Why did you forget?”

14 “I never heard of it. But I can bring it if you tell me what it is.”

15 “That’s not good that you don't listen to people
“That’s not good that you don't listen to people. You shouldn’t always ask.”

16 “I have an idea. Go to Hamaya (a general store) and borrow a tenshiki on my order. Then, you’ll learn what it is. Go right away.”

17 (Chin’nen goes to Hamaya, wondering what tenshiki is.)

18 Hello. Owner: Hello, Chin’nen. My master told me to borrow tenshiki from you.

19 Owner: Tenshiki. Big one or small one?
Either one will do. Owner: I see. Wait a minute.

20 Owner: Tenshiki? Not furoshiki… Manager, Chin’nen wants tenshiki and I have another business to attend to so get him tenshiki.

21 Manager: Yes, sir. Tenshiki…tenshiki. What is it?
You don’t know… Oh, okamisan (owner’s wife) would know…Okamisan, Chin’nen is here to borrow tenshiki.

22 Wife: I see. Tenshiki. I will get you one right away.
Sorry, I must have put it away somewhere. Omaesan (the owner), Chin’nen wants tenshiki.

23 Owner: It came around and back to me…
We have just sold out tenshiki. We don’t have one in stock. Please tell the monk we will keep one for him next time.

24 Thank you very much. I will ask ojiisan (flower shop owner) what it is. Ojiisan, my master sent me to borrow tenshiki.

25 Ojiisan: I see. Tenshiki. Wait a minute.
Baasan (his wife), Chin’nen needs to borrow tenshiki. Bring one out.

26 You don’t know what it is?
Neither do I.

27 We put one in the miso soup this morning and ate it.
The other one was taken by our guest as a souvenir. So, we don't’ have any left.

28 I wonder what it is. (Chin’nen comes back to the temple.)

29 “Were you able to borrow tenshiki?”
“At the general store, it was sold out.”

30 “Sold out? I see. Yes, it does sell very well.”

31 “They will keep one for you next time.”
“At the flower shop, they ate it in the miso soup. What is tenshiki?”

32 “Why do you depend on me to get the answer?”

33 “Go to the doctor’s office and get my medication.
Tell him YOU want to know what it is.”

34 “Then, tell me what it is and I will tell you how to use it.”

35 (Chin’nen goes to the doctor’s office.)

36 “Doctor, I am here to pick up the medication for my master.”
“Chin’nen. You have a question? Go ahead and ask. What is it?”

37 “ What is tenshiki?” “You must have heard the word when I visited the temple. It is not a common word.”

38 (Doctor gives a historical explanation
(Doctor gives a historical explanation. He explains that tenshiki is farting.)

39 “Tenshiki refers to onara.”
“What is onara?”

40 “Onara? the one that comes out from my butt.”
“My master told me to borrow one.”

41 “Tenshiki is farting.” “I was trying to borrow fart?”

42 (Chin’nen recalls what everybody was saying.)

43 (He notices that nobody knew what tenshiki was.)

44 “My master does not know what it is
“My master does not know what it is. If I tell him the answer, he would just say ‘I knew that.’” “I must trick him. “

45 “He likes drinking. I will tell him tenshiki is…sakazuki (a sake cup)

46 (Chin’nen comes back to the temple.)
“I am back.”

47 “Put the medication right there. Did you ask him what tenshiki was?”

48 “Yes, I did. Tenshiki refers to sakazuki (a sake cup).”

49 “Tenshiki is sakazuki (sake cup)
“Tenshiki is sakazuki (sake cup). (He analyzes the kanji, and thinks he figures out why.) Oh! I see.”

50 Yes, sakazuki (sake cup) is indeed tenshiki.
From now, when a guest comes to the temple, I will tell you to bring tenshiki in stead of sakazuki

51 We have a nice set of triple-layer sakazuki.

52 “A set of triple-layer sakazuki?”

53 (Next day, the doctor makes a follow-up visit.)

54 “How are you feeling?”

55 “I am better. I told you yesterday I had not had tenshiki, but I have them.”

56 “I see. That is good. Please continue to do.”
“I love to, but at the temple, I cannot do tenshiki from the morning.”

57 “You can do tenshiki any time, in the morning, in the afternoon, or even while chanting.”
“You must like tenshiki huh?”

58 “Well, I cannot say I like it, but I do it sometimes.”
“Does your wife like tenshiki?”

59 “My wife? She must do it quietly.”

60 “At the dining table, two of you are facing each other and eating together,
exchanging tenshiki.”

61 “We don’t do that.”

62 “I would like to show you tenshiki that we are proud of.”
“No, no, thank you.”

63 “Chin’nen, bring the tenshiki.”

64 “Please have a look.” “Is tenshiki inside this wooden box?”

65 “I cleaned them and wrapped them in cotton.”
“This is the first time I’ll actually see tenshiki. Oh, these are very nice sake cups.”

66 “These are just ordinary tenshiki.”

67 “Among doctors, Tenshiki is farting.
but in the temple…tenshiki refers to a sake cup? “

68 “Tenshiki is farting!? Chin’nen tricked me. But a sake cup is tenshiki because when monks do too much of either, we get…“

69 “booed”
