WITsi Strategy - BBS Based on materials covered in class on diffusion (Lab on Diffusion, class discussion, ppt presentation), change the following fragment into three complete sentences, using the BBS strategy. Be careful with capitalization and punctuation. Starch did not go out of the “cell” (dialysis tube) because___________________ _____________________________________________________________________ Starch did not go out of the “cell” (dialysis tube) but_______________________ ______________________________________________________________________ Starch did not go out of the “cell” (dialysis tube) so _______________________
3
Do Now – Group these foods in three categories
Have you heard the term “organic”? How do you define it? What does it mean?
4
Standard In all organisms, organic compounds can be used to assemble other molecules such proteins, DNA, starch, and fats. The chemical energy stored in bonds can be used as a source of energy for life processes.
5
HW Pg.- 26, Questions (48-53) Part A Due Monday, Nov. 9, 2015
6
Biochemistry The study of the chemical reactions of living things
11
Monomers vs. Polymers Mono = 1 Poly = many ..meros = part, piece
Polymers = Molecules made from repeating units/ parts of identical or nearly identical compounds (called monomers).
13
Why do organisms need inorganic compounds?
H2O = is the basic solvent in cells (used in most reactions in body) O2 = is used for cellular respiration to release the energy
15
Carbohydrates Aim: Why are carbohydrates important for living organisms? Standard: Many organic and inorganic substances dissolved in cells allow necessary chemical reactions to take place in order to maintain life. Large organic food molecules such as proteins and starches must initially be broken down (digested to amino acids and simple sugars respectively), in order to enter cells.
16
DO NOW - Regents questions practice
WHY?????????
17
Water is classified as an inorganic compound because it
A) does not contain nitrogen B) does not contain carbon C) contains hydrogen D) contains oxygen
18
Hand Back the Test HW for tomorrow, Nov. 13, 2015
Parents should SIGN the test. You get +2 points. Ppt will be posted on school website. Fewer notes to be copied in class.
19
Project instructions – Macromolecules’ pyramid
Group work – Individual product Due Nov. 17, 2015. Incorporate colors, pictures, drawings. All components should be present.
20
Carbohydrates Potatoes, Rice, Pasta, Sugar, Flour
Are organic compounds used for: Source of energy/fuel (glucose) Storage of food (starch) Structure material (cellulose) Potatoes, Rice, Pasta, Sugar, Flour
21
Main sources
23
Contain the elements carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen in a ratio 1:2:1.
C6H12O6
24
Monosaccharides Disaccarides
The simplest sugars. Ex. Glucose, - Lactose (sugar in milk) - Fructose (fruit sugar) C6H12O6 Two monosaccharide molecules= Two sugars. Ex. Maltose ( 2 glucose) - Sucrose (table sugar) =glucose + fructose C12 H22 O11
25
Polysaccharides Formed of three or more simple sugar units
Glycogen - animal starch stored in liver & muscles Cellulose - indigestible in humans; forms cell walls Starches - used as energy storage.
26
Aim: How do carbs affect our health?
Do now: H2O is an ___________________(O/I) Because it _______________
27
Source of Energy, Storage and Structure
28
Lab review Which indicator is used to tell the presence of STARCH in a solution? Which indicator is used to tell the presence of GLUCOSE in a solution? IODINE/ LUGOL’S BENEDICT’S
29
Formation of Carbohydrates
Hydrolysis Vs. Dehydration The process of breaking apart di- and poly saccharides by the addition of water. The process of combining simple sugars into complex ones by removing water molecules.
30
HW In which ways is an organic compound different from an inorganic compound? Why do we need carbohydrates? In what way do animals and plants store food?
