World War I Section 3: Winning the War

Waging Total War Nations restructured their economies to feed their war efforts. All citizens—women included—had roles to play in the war-driven economy. TOTAL WAR The average citizen was also made a target when navies began forming blockades to stop not only military supplies, but food and ships carrying civilians.

Morale Collapses With mounting death tolls and massive food shortages in most of Europe and Russia, troops began to desert their posts. In Russia, a revolution erupted that would bring V.I. Lenin to power.

The United States Declares War
Germany announced they would resume unrestricted submarine warfare German foreign minister was discovered soliciting Mexico’s attach against the United States, Cultural ties with Allies Sympathy for its fellow democracies President Wilson asked Congress to declare war on Germany.

American Enters WWI German U-boat torpedoed & sinks Lusitania, America sees it as an atrocity, helps US join Allies Zimmerman Note Incident- allows extreme mistrust & ultimately helped force US into WWI American military & financial intervention affected the course & outcome of WWI

Victory at Last When fresh troops from the US arrived in Europe by the thousands, the weary German forces were no match. Austria-Hungary were also unraveling and its subject nations seized the moment to revolt. Armistice occurs at 11,11, 11, 1918 (November, 11, at 11 a.m. 1918)

Woodrow Wilson's Fourteen Points
" The main points in this document were: no more secret treaties countries must seek to reduce their weapons and their armed forces national self-determination should allow people of the same nationality to govern themselves and one nationality should not have the power to govern another all countries should belong to the League of Nations. Jest of it: (Wilson’s term for long lasting peace was ending the war & future wars)
