1
Male Reproductive System
Includes: Scrotum – holds the testes outside the body Keeps them 3o cooler to prevent death of sperm (maintains homeostasis) Testes Sperm and testosterone are produced here Penis – allows for internal fertilization Semen – contains the sperm
2
Female Reproductive System
Includes: Ovary – contains the eggs (ova) Production of eggs, estrogen and progesterone occurs here 1 egg is released each month during ovulation Fallopian Tube – tube that leads from the ovary to the uterus Fertilization occurs here (oviduct) Uterus – development occurs here after fertilization (the center triangle) Vagina – canal that leads from uterus to outside the body, sperm enters here, passageway for birth to occur
3
Menstruation Occurs if an egg is not fertilized
Results in a shedding of the uterine lining (wall) Bleeding occurs to remove the tissue from the body Average cycle is 28 days long If fertilization occurs the menstrual cycle will temporarily stop for the duration of the pregnancy
4
Fertilization Combining of sperm and egg cells to form a zygote
23 unpaired chromosomes from male 23 unpaired chromosomes from female Chromosomes join resulting in a fertilized egg (zygote) that has 46 paired chromosomes
5
Reproductive Hormones
Testosterone – Male Enables sexual development and reproduction Causes voice changes to occur Helps with muscle development Estrogen and Progesterone – Female Sexual development and reproduction Prepares the body for fertilization Increases levels during pregnancy and decreases if fertilization does not occur (not pregnant)
6
Homework Questions: On loose leaf paper to be handed in tomorrow…
