Real-life applications
Renishaw plc 16/06/2018 Real-life applications Electroimpact Inc is a world-leader in the design and manufacture of aerospace of low-voltage electromagnetic riveters (LVERs) They selected RGH41 encoders with RGS040 scale for a new set of custom LVERs designed for the Airbus A380 wing programme. Each axis required a continuous scale length of 160 metres “ It’s absolutely amazing. It gives us a highly repeatable process. The guys here don’t even know it’s there. We are now designing all our machines with Renishaw linear encoder systems in mind “ Please read the notes below: Please use link below for further details (paste following into browser): Confidential

RG4 basic principles Readhead sensor uses patented filtering optics
Renishaw plc 16/06/2018 RG4 basic principles Readhead sensor uses patented filtering optics RS422 digital output or 1 Vpp direct from readhead OR Manual reference mark phasing. REE interpolator uses advanced algorithms to allow easy calibration For higher performance applications, the REE interpolator allows access to higher resolutions and reduced SDE Please read the notes below: Within the readhead, an infra-red LED emits light laterally onto a scale with reflective and non-reflective areas. The light is directed back off the reflective areas through a transparent phase grating. This produces sinusoidal interference fringes at the detection plane within the readhead. The optical scheme averages the contributions from many scale graduations and effectively filters out signals not matching the scale period. This ensures signal stability even when the scale is contaminated or slightly damaged. Low short-term errors are assured by the unique optical design, typically giving less than ±0.30 μm Sub-Divisional Error (SDE). For even lower SDE and even higher signal stability, the analogue version of the RGH40 can be connected to the REE interface which include Auto Gain Control (AGC) and Auto Offset Control (AOC) that operates at all speeds. ** Slide animates the scale and output waveforms together – the presenter should allow several seconds for this to run** Confidential

Renishaw plc 16/06/2018 RG4 readhead options RGH34 Component readhead: 15 x 15 x 10.5 mm Linear speed to 8 m/s Resolutions to 50 nm 0 °C – 55 °C RGH40 Readhead size: 44 x 27 x 17 mm Option of digital output direct from head Optional REE interpolator (compatible with 1 Vpp output variants only) Speeds to 10 m/s and resolutions to 50 nm 0 °C – 55 °C Please read the notes below: RG4 linear encoder system - generous installation tolerances and high-speed, non-contact performance with filtering optics to guarantee reliable performance over light oils, dust and scratches. The RGH34 is a non-contact readhead that offers the performance and reliability of the established RG4 linear encoder system with the versatility of a miniaturised component system. Generous installation tolerances and high-speed, non-contact performance combine with filtering optics to guarantee reliable performance over light oils, dust and scratches. In combination with the RGI interface, the RGH34 system is available with high resolution digital outputs up to 50 nm or with industry standard 1 Vpp analogue output. Confidential

RG4 linear scales Lengths > 50 m Thermally masters to the substrate
Renishaw plc 16/06/2018 RG4 linear scales RGS tape (RGH 34 and 41 only) Lengths > 50 m Thermally masters to the substrate ±15 µm / m accuracy at 20 °C Repeatable reference mark with magnetic actuator Mounted with adhesive and end-clamps RTLR (RGH45 only) Lengths to 20 m ±15 µm / m at 20 °C Magnetically actuated reference mark FASTRACK™ carrier or adhesive mounting options Please read the notes below: RGS40 is a ribbon scale manufactured from a thin flexible steel strip, featuring a 40 µm pitch, which is gold plated to give high reflectivity and corrosion resistance. It may be mounted using UHV compatible adhesive backing tape, to most engineering materials, including metals, ceramics and composites. Secured to the substrate with scale end-clamps, RGS is mastered to the substrate and will match the substrates thermal expansion. The scale is supplied on a reel and can be cut to suit any axis length up to 50 m. RTLR40 is a low profile stainless steel ribbon scale featuring a 40 µm pitch. Accurate to ±15 µm/m and in lengths up to 20 metres. Two mounting options are available, both allow independent thermal expansion and ribbon scale convenience. RTLR40 can be used with the revolutionary FASTRACK™ scale carrier system. This system allows a track to be laid quickly and easily with no need for fixing holes. A sacrificial spacer is removed and the ribbon is then fed into the track. RTLR40-S is laid onto the substrate with self-adhesive backing tape. The self-adhesive is formulated in such a way that it allows for independent scale expansion to that of the substrate. To complete the installation, both types of scale are clamped at one point to provide a datum position. Confidential

RG4 linear scales Lengths to 1.01 m
Renishaw plc 16/06/2018 RG4 linear scales RGS40-G spar (RGH 40 only) Lengths to 1.01 m Glass scale with ±4.2 µm / m accuracy at 20 °C Repeatable reference mark with magnetic actuator Adhesive or clip / clamp mounting Please read the notes below: RGS40-G is a glass spar scale featuring 40 µm pitch incremental graduations in lengths up to 1 m. The spar has an accuracy of better than ±4.1 µm over a 1 m length. System designers can choose between specially formulated adhesive tape or mechanical clips to suit mounting requirements. Both mounting methods allow for independent thermal expansion to that of the substrate. Confidential

RG4 rotary scale Low profile scales with standard sizes up to Ø550 mm
Renishaw plc 16/06/2018 RG4 rotary scale RESR ring (RGH40 only) Low profile scales with standard sizes up to Ø550 mm Uni-directionally repeatable reference marks with magnetic actuator Graduation accuracy to ±0.5 arc second (Ø550 ring) Patented taper mount simplifies integration and eliminates installation errors Please read the notes below: RESR incremental angle encoder is a one-piece stainless steel ring with 40 µm graduations marked directly on the periphery. Two versions are available in a wide range of sizes (Ø52 mm to Ø550 mm). ‘A' section rings, which offer an impressive installed accuracy, feature a taper mount system which reduce the need for highly toleranced machined parts and eliminate eccentricity. ‘B' section thin rings, which are low inertia and mass, are also available. Both 'A' and 'B' section rings have a large internal diameter for flexible integration. The non-contact format eliminates backlash, shaft wind-up (torsion) and other mechanical hysteresis errors that are inherent in traditional enclosed encoders. Confidential
