Aerobic respiration Objectives:
Recall the aerobic respiration equation. Name the reactants in aerobic respiration and where they are acquired from. Explain how aerobic respiration is used and which organelle it occurs in. To safely complete an experiment on aerobic respiration.
2
Starter: What is happening in all these images
3
What is aerobic respiration?
What is it used for? The billions of cells in our body carry out lots of different reaction for us to function. These cells require energy to do their job. Respiration occurs in the mitochondrion.
4
Cells, Organelles and their function.
5
Mitochondrion
6
Task 1: What is the equation for respiration?
Where does respiration take place? Draw and label a mitochondrion.
7
So how is aerobic respiration used?
8
Progress check (T or F) Answer the statements true or false.
Aerobic respiration is used to bake bread. Anaerobic respiration is used when there is little oxygen available. Beer and wine are made using aerobic respiration.
9
The experiment. Energy in food

Results table Food type Water temperature at start (°C)
Water temperature at end (°C) Change in temperature (°C) Total amount of energy in the food(J) Ryvita Oat cracker Cheese ring

Method Set up the boiling tube and thermometer as shown in the diagram. Add 20 mL water. Note the temperature of the water and record it in the table below. Pick up the food with a set of tongs. Use a Bunsen burner to start the potato crisp burning. As soon as the crisp starts to burn, place it under the boiling tube to heat the water. When the food has gone out, measure the temperature of the water. Record this in your table. Repeat for remaining types of food.

Plenary What is the aerobic respiration equation?
20 mL = 20 g /1000 = kg Change = End – Start Plenary What is the aerobic respiration equation? Use this formula to work out the energy in your potato crisp. Energy (Joules) = mass of water (g) change in temperature (°C) 4.2 J/kg C What would you need to do to be able to compare the energy in different crisps and different foods? Suggest how you could improve your experiment to give a more accurate measurement of the energy in the crisp.
