D-Day - The Planning FDR, Stalin and Churchill met in Iran in to decide how to finish the war. Stalin wanted more American and British troops. FDR agreed and eventually persuaded Churchill to get more troops involved. The three men decided to come up with a plan to liberate France and attack Germany. The plan would be called “Operation Overlord.”

D-Day – The Planning General Dwight Eisenhower - Supreme Commander over the Allied forces, Bernard Montgomery - commander of the ground forces, and General Omar Bradley – United States First Army Overlord involved 21 American Divisions (150,528 troops), 26 British, Canadian, and Polish Divisions (186,368 troops), and 4,400 ships and landing craft to be spread over 50 miles of beach.

D-Day – The Planning The Allies staged a fake command post in Southeast England and made it seem that the attack would be at Calais. General George Patton was sent to “command” this invasion. Cardboard tanks and useless ships were used to trick the Germans. The real beaches at Normandy were codenamed: Omaha, Utah, Juno, Sword, and Gold.

D-DAY – The Attack The assault was divided into two phases: Air and Ground. An air assault that was designed to take out German communication, transportation, and soften Nazi held beaches. The ground assault started at 6:30 am. Four of the beaches had low resistance by German forces but at Omaha (American Beach) the resistance was strong.

D-Day – The Attack The German army dug trenches, built concrete pillboxes to fire weapons on enemy troops, mined the beach, and built obstacles to slow American troops. As troops landed on the beaches they faced immediate gunfire. Some of the soldiers were dropped off too far from land and drowned before they could get to the beach.

D-Day - Summary Total allied casualties (killed, wounded, missing, or captured) are estimated at approximately 10,000. These comprised: United States–6,603, of which 1,465 fatal. United Kingdom– 2,700. Canada–1,074, of which 359 fatal. “D-Day” means the day on which a military operation begins.
