Pen pal outreach activity
Communicate through a pen pal program with 6th graders at Cesar Chavez Middle School. Student participants will be matched up with one to two kids. Volunteers will write a letter to their pen pal every other week and will receive letters on "off" weeks. Please note also that this is a full year commitment, so you will be writing letters to your pen pal next semester as well. Contact Nick Silva:

Science Café: Science, Politics, and Power Wednesday, October 21 5:30 - 7:30 PM Conor O’Neill’s Irish Pub Can research be objective? Should scientists be political? Researchers are embedded in a system of funding dependent on politics and power, and the relationships can be complex. Join John Vandermeer, Asa Gray Distinguished University Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology, Ivette Perfecto, George W. Pack Professor of Ecology, Natural Resources and Environment, and graduate student Theresa Ong as they give us some tools for analysis of these relationships. We will discuss the history and reemergence of scientists as advocates and activists, including reflections on more subtle aspects, from funding sources to “actively naive” assumptions about sociopolitical structures. Science Cafés provide an opportunity for audiences to discuss current science topics with experts in an informal setting. Hors d’oeuvres at 5:30 PM; program 6:00-7:30 PM.
