Author Biography Francis Scott Key Fitzgerald was born on September 24, His father came from an aristocratic background, and his mother hailed from a working-class Irish family. He was named after Francis Scott Key, a relative of his father, who composed “The Star Spangled Banner.”

Author Biography His early years were characterized by his social awkwardness, his loneliness, and his intense, highly romantic imagination. It wasn’t until he attended Princeton University that he found a creative outlet. There he made lifelong friendships with other writers and became prominent in the university’s literary scene.

Author Biography In spite of his literary successes, Fitzgerald struggled with his academic work, and he failed to graduate. He joined the army, and while he was stationed in Alabama, he met his future wife, Zelda Sayre. They married after his first novel, This Side of Paradise, was published.

Author Biography The couple had a daughter, Frances, and moved to France, where Fitzgerald completed his masterwork, The Great Gatsby.

Author Biography Not long after the novel’s publication, Fitzgerald embarked on a drinking career that would ultimately be his downfall, and Zelda suffered a nervous breakdown and was committed to a mental institution. Fitzgerald’s writing suffered in the haze of alcohol and the chaos of his life with Zelda. He then moved to Hollywood and found work as a scriptwriter.

Author Biography On December 21, 1940, Fitzgerald suffered a fatal heart attack and left his final novel, The Last Tycoon, unfinished.
