How many people are affected?
Are some subgroups or demographics disproportionately affected?
In what regions/places are people affected?
How long has this problem been happening?
Is it increasing?
Etc…

3. Severity = Depth: How bad is this issue
Severity = Depth: How bad is this issue? How severely does it affect people’s lives?
What effects does this issue have on the people involved? (consider all the people involved)
How does it change their lives?
Does it interfere with their ability to live a productive life?
Does it cause inequality between groups of people?
How can we measure these effects with data/statistics?

4. Consider all these types of effects…
Physical
Psychological
Emotional
Social (family relationships, interactions with community, etc)
Financial

5. Symptoms:
How can we measure the effects of this issue with data/statistics?
How does it affect society? (the way we live together)
In other words: Where this problem exists, what things would we see happening that can be measured?
Ex: Because global warming exists, we see:
-more frequent and severe droughts
-increased flooding and more tropical storms
-higher temperatures
-a spike in certain diseases (dengue fever)
