1 Elena Climent

2 Elena Climent was born in Mexico City in 1955.
Her father was the Spanish artist Enrique Climent. She developed as an independent and self- taught artist while living in Mexico, Spain, France, and the United States.

Elena Climent decided to become an artist at the age of 16. She exhibited her work for the first time when she was 17. In 1988, she had a solo show at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City and moved to New York City shortly thereafter. Elena Climent is known for detailed still-life paintings of commonplace objects of contemporary Mexico.

4 Elena Climent turned away from exclusive gallery representation, preferring to work as an independent artist and to complement her easel painting with a new orientation to public art projects. Her most recent accomplishment in that field is a 60 foot wide mural titled ‘At Home with Their Books,’ that is on permanent exhibition at New York University’s Languages and Literatures building.

5 Drawing with Light Elena Climent created 20 digital drawings created on the iPad. Output as giclée prints, the works will be mounted side by side. Elena Climent - interested in the link between traditional methods of drawing and electronic drawing in the 21st Century, compares the ability of the iPad “Zoom” feature to show details not visible to the naked eye with Vermeer’s use of the camera obscura to investigate tiny visual details he later included in his paintings – details that can only be seen using a magnifying glass.

6 “When making art on an iPad, you are creating a pure image with no physical weight or texture or temperature. You are not mixing colors on a palette until you find the exact hue; you are not thinning the paint with turpentine to make it more transparent; you are not interacting with the behavior of the surface, whether canvas, paper, wood, tin or any other. There is no drying time, no humidity factor, no cracking. Creating art on an iPad or computer is the closest I have ever felt to drawing or painting directly from my mind. I look, I think, I decide what color I want and I make it happen on the screen. I have learned to mix colors in my brain. My experience with iPad art has taught me that even something as seemingly cold, industrial and impersonal as a computer screen can become intimate, personal and poetic.” Elena Climent

"I think wherever we are we reproduce ourselves. People reflect themselves by their surroundings. We create an order around us, a mirror of what we are. I'm fascinated by what objects absorb of people." Elena Climent, Windows from Here to Then

10 Elena Climent uses objects Cocina con vista al viaducto sill-life painting to pay tribute to her mother, who passed away in Many of the objects in the painting hold special memories of her mother and her mother's kitchen. The plane, red car, 2 ears of corn, pop bottles, 2 chairs, herbal tea and its container, different tiles, and the calendar all hold symbolic meanings.
