1 Tutorial Introduction
PURPOSE To provide an overview of Motorola’s HC05/08 development tools and related Selector Guide OBJECTIVE: Identify the various sources of HC05/08 development tools and their related characteristics. CONTENTS: 7 pages LEARNING TIME: 10 minutes This training tutorial includes information about development tools and the related Selector Guide available for Motorola’s 68HC05/68HC08 families of microprocessors.

2 Complete with everything a designer needs!
ICS Development Kits Complete with everything a designer needs! Windows 3.x/95/NT integrated development environment Full chip software simulation FLASH Programming Real-time in-circuit emulation (less clock and control) In-circuit debug Development kits are an important compliment to any product and the In-Circuit Simulator, or ICS, kit happens to include everything a designer needs in one easy-to-order kit. It provides full software simulation, in-circuit simulation with the supplied DIP target cable, real-time in-circuit emulation (with a fixed clock and one I/O pin unavailable for emulation), a FLASH programmer (in socket or in-system) and an in-circuit debugger using MON08 background debug mode. It also includes samples, all cables and power supplies needed, and full documentation. The software provided in the kits can operate standalone using the simulator and is available to download from the Motorola Microcontroller web site for free. The full kit is available for $295 suggested distributor resale. $295 Suggested Distributor Resale

3 Modular Development Kits MMEVS and MMDS
MMEVS cost-effective real-time emulator development kit Includes ICS $1495 suggested resale MMDS high-performance real-time emulator development kit Integral bus state analysis Dual port memory $3950 suggested resale You can upgrade from the ICS to the modular MMEVS kit for $1495 to get full real-time, in-circuit emulation for all package types. This kit includes the ICS. The highest performance Motorola solution is the $3950 MMDS kit, which adds advanced debugging capabilities such as bus state analysis and dual port memory. Bus state analysis can be very helpful when debugging complex problems. All features and components of the MMEVS are included with the MMDS kit. Keep in mind that customers can fully design and develop Motorola FLASH MCUs just with the free software on the web. Upgrading to the ICS, the MMEVS, or MMDS just makes it easier to debug complex problems.

4 Dev Tool Selector Guide (SG188/D) 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit MCUs
For details on all development tools for all Motorola MCUs, check out the related Selector Guide, SG188/D.

5 Dev Tool Selector Guide (SG188/D) 68HC05/68HC08 Development Kits
Device Part In-Circuit MMEVS MMDS Emulation Flex SMT & DIP DIP Serial Integrated CD User Power Silicon Support Number Simulator/ Platform Station Module Cable Target Target Cable Development ROM Manuals Supply Samples Programmer Board Module Head Cable Environment (Board) Adapter M681CS08GP X 68HC908GP32 Use the Development Kits page to determine which complete kit is available for the 68HC05/68HC08 family. Development kits include: Cost effective ICS kits Real time emulation MMEVS kits High performance emulation MMDS kits The 68HC05/08 development kit section of the Selector Guide lists the kits that are currently available. All new FLASH HC08s will have easy-order kits on introduction. Please note that not every 68HC05 or 68HC08 is covered by a kit.

6 Dev Tool Selector Guide (SG188/D) 68HC05/68HC08 Emulators, Cables and Adapters
Device Platform Emulation Packages Flex Cable Target Head Surface Mount Modules Supported Adapter Adapter 68HC908GP32 M68MMPFB0508 or M68MMDS0508 M68EML08GP32 40 DIP-P M68CBL05B M68TB08GP32P40 Use the Emulators, Cables and Adapters pages if the customer already owns an MMEVS or MMDS from Motorola. Steps: Determine which MCU and which package the customer wants to use. Determine if the customer has the MMEVS platform board or MMDS. Offer the customer the following: Emulation module Flex cables Target head adapter and surface mount adapter The Selector’s Guide’s section on emulators, cables, and adapters can be used for those parts not available in kits or for customers who already have a Motorola kit and want to upgrade to a different MCU. To use this section, first you need to determine which MCU the customer wants and then whether they already have an MMEVS platform board or the MMDS station module. If they don’t, you should select the MMEVS for more cost-effective emulation and the MMDS for high performance emulation. Finally, you should find the appropriate part and give the customer the noted emulation module order number. Continue along the row and find the specific package the customer is using and provide the flex cable and target head adapter. For surface mount parts, there is usually an additional adapter.

7 Dev Tool Selector Guide (SG188/D) 68HC05/68HC08 Programmers
Device Packages Supported Programmer Board Programming Adapter 68HC908GP32 40 DIP-P M681CS08GP NA Use the 68HC05/08 Programmers section to determine the programmer board for the device your customer is interested in. Programming boards and adapters are already included in development kits. Only use if customer is buying “a la carte” You will find programmers listed in a separate section of the Guide. Please note that all components, including programmers, are part of the kits presented in the first section of the Selector Guide.
